What a sad and dark day.

These beautiful souls are Hughes Van Ellis, 102, Lessie Benningfield Randle, 108, and Viola Fletcher, who just turned 109. They are the oldest living survivors of the Tulsa Race Massacre. They have received $0 reparations.

They sued for justice. Sadly, Tulsa County District Judge Caroline Wall just granted the City of Tulsa’s motion to dismiss the case with prejudice, meaning the case can’t be refiled.

Reparations Now.

@KC8JC Well said. Agreed. Especially the part about being embarrassed and afraid of getting on the air. Don't be. Once you get out there and start doing it with other operators, especially other beginners, you'll see why I say that. ;-)

I also agree with the part about excessive off-air practice. I know from experience. Back in the day I wanted to take all the tests in one sitting so I worked my code speed past 20 words per minute and took the test in one sitting. That's very nice but doesn't teach you a thing about holding a conversation on CW. Learning to recite the alphabet really fast doesn't teach you to speak French.

I also found when I finally got on the air that I could only copy perfectly sent code. Hah! Nobody sends perfect code with perfect timing. How do people copy this busted up mess I'm hearing? It turns out that just like language, with experience your brain can make sense of what you're hearing, regardless of inconsistent timing, extra dits, missing dits, and so on. With practice it becomes easy and effortless.

In addition, radio conditions can be extremely difficult if you're trying to copy a weak signal through noise and fading. This is where repeats come in too. Your brain can fill in what's missing and assemble the information from bits and pieces.

Learning to copy perfect machine-generated code at 25 words per minute doesn't help you with any of the above so don't waste your time on it. Get on the air.

@karlauerbach Thanks for your answers. Yeah, I hear you loud and clear on the sliding problem. That has to be addressed.

Induction certainly does generate magnetic forces inside the iron but I doubt it's much force.

The field over the burner should be nice and uniform. By spot heating I was wondering if certain parts of the iron were experiencing spot heating, perhaps due to variations in conductivity of the iron. Cast iron is a pretty poor heat conductor so the heating might not have been uniform across the surface of the griddle. I dunno. Would be interesting to know exactly how and why it happened.

Sounds like your gas stove isn't a good candidate for comparison. Hah. I was thinking something like my Magic Chef domestic stove with weak little burners that irritate me greatly. (You get spoiled cooking on commercial Vulcan stoves.) Hah.

One real thing I've noticed as a parent of a young child is how EASY it is to emotionally manipulate me by evoking harm to a kid, now.

An action movie with a baby in danger messes with me.

It's a visceral, physical sensation, and fascists like Moms 4 Liberty intentionally play on it.

@karlauerbach Oh dear. Spot heating and so quickly that differential expansion cracked it?

Good news for a hot planet

@ChrisMayLA6 Yes. That way I'll be around to laugh at the next absurd thing that comes along. I wouldn't want to miss it.

Threads is Instagram. Instagram is Facebook. Facebook is Meta. Meta is Mark Zuckerberg.

Facebook was complicit in a literal genocide.

Meta is a surveillance capitalist that exploits you for profit.

Mark Zuckerberg straight up called you “dumb fucks” for trusting him.

What’s it going to take for you to not help these assholes continue to fuck people over?

@pbump I don't know about a bump but it's been the case for years among Republicans I know that they want regime change. They're tired of being the minority party, which they've always been. Democracy is not working for them.

@karlauerbach Been thinking about induction myself. Decided a while ago that all new cookware will be "induction ready".

An 1800W unit should deliver the same if not a little more heating power than a domestic stove gas flame. Have you tried tests like "time to boil 2 liters of water" and compared? Just curious.

I've been experimenting with induction cooking. I bought one of those ubiquituous Duxtop 1800W units.

Some results:

1. The surface is glass and far too smooth. There's not a lot of friction - it is too easy for a hot skillet or pot to slide off. That's rather dangerous.

2. The sliding gets worse if there are drops of water on the glass surface. Those turn to steam and form a nice gas bearing so that the skillet or pot slides as if it were on glare ice, sometimes under its own power. This is *extremely* dangerous.

These faults could probably be cured by having some groves in the cooking surface so that steam under the pot can vent and some texture to the glass to give some frictional resistance to prevent things from moving so easily.

"Threads, because Facebook isn't shitty enough for you."

@ChrisMayLA6 Hahaha. I don't know whether to laugh or shoot myself in the head.

I was not looking for Painted Buntings this morning, but I heard one singing at one site near Manhattan KS, and this one singing at another site a few miles away. Hope this July territorial behavior means that they are going to raise a second batch of babies this summer!
