A mysterious network called AdStyle is placing ads with fake endorsements from celebrities on conservative sites based in the U.S. and abroad. With names like Liberal Hack Watch, most of the sites in the network publish content with a pro-Trump bent. propublica.org/article/right-w @craigsilverman @ProPublica

My dad told us, “Nothing worth doing is ever easy.” I discourage the use of absolutes by my kids, but the sentiment is solid and it’s how I feel about this place. The work is the reward. Active engagement versus passive voyeurism. It has changed how I view social media and I am damn grateful for that. I raise my glass to all the admins and mods volunteering their time to maintain Mastodon. Thank you and cheers!

Vermont about to see extreme rain on the order of Hurricane Irene in 2011.

vtdigger.org/2023/07/09/catast

Before 2011, this amount of rainfall was nearly impossible. 12 years ago it was possible with a hurricane. Now it's just a summer day.

Great job, Exxon.

@knittingknots2 I read somewhere that Giuliani was involved in planting stuff on the laptop.

We shall see.

@SrRochardBunson Hiding behind the flag, the Bible, and children is the primary refuge of the scoundrel.

Recapping the July 7 & 8th, 2023 northwest Canada/extreme eastern Alaska heatwave, here are selected (preliminary) maximum temperatures. Norman Wells 37.9C (100F) on July 8th is evidently the highest temperature on record so far north (65.3ºN) in Canada.

@Waterloo2 Yes, not here yet. No charging infrastructure to speak of. I once saw a Prius years ago. Two years ago I saw a Volt. Just recently saw a Rivian pickup. Those are the only EVs I've ever seen here yet.

Here it's Dodge RAMs, Challengers, and 60s vintage muscle cars. Many of them heavily hot-rodded. Haha. The women drive SUVs. No EVs in sight.

This will change, of course, but the process will be ugly. Most men here wouldn't be caught dead driving an EV.

One of the big advantages of EVs is home charging. But the houses here do not have garages. It's street parking so that advantage is lost on the consumer here. Also, the electric grid is very old and shaky. It's the Rust Belt. The process will be "interesting".

I'm 59. When I was born, segregation existed, interracial marriage was illegal and women were not allowed to have credit cars in their own names until I was 11 years old. CIVIL RIGHTS ARE A NEW THING.

@Nazani @trinsec Fortunately, that's changing. EVs can be mass-produced more cheaply than ICE vehicles, and they will be.

If you take maintenance costs into account, the line was crossed a long time ago but most people just look at the sticker price.

@TruthSandwich I think that's part of the problem. They're already angry that catalytic converters have eliminated exhaust smell. They like it from what I can tell. If there is black smoke so much the better. If the exhaust is really loud, so much the better. If that's not enough you can do burnouts which are common here. Spin the tires for a whole block and generate a big cloud of blue stinky smoke.

@pmonks Impossible, yes, because there's no common frame of reference if facts are dismissed and fantasies are accepted as truth.

I feel like everyone joining threads has completely forgotten about zuckerburg giving cops the user data of women seeking abortions.

Anna Muzychuk is champion & queen of chess. She refused to play in Saudi Arabia.”I refuse to play with special rules, like wearing an Abaya, being accompanied by a man to leave the hotel. Will lose 2 world titles. It’s unfortunate, but I can’t feel like I’m a 2nd class person.

@trinsec Of course it's not true. It's doubly untrue. Not only are brake pads not the source of pollution that matters, CO2, but conventional brakes on an EV are only used for hard stops and panic stops. EVS use regenerative braking that generates electricity and recharges the battery every time you apply the brakes.

Here's the latest rumor that's spreading like wildfire among the right-wing rubes here in West Virginia. They're certain they're "in on the scam".

"Electric cars pollute just as much as regular cars because all the pollution from cars comes from the brake pads. Electric cars have brake pads like every car so they pollute just as much."

Sigh. This is, of course, ridiculously wrong in two different ways but it's the latest "the liberals are scamming everyone" rumor here in West Virginia.
