@lauren I think you misunderstand my point. I love Poitier's movies. I assumed you'd know what segment of the population I was referring to.

His movies came out at a time in the U.S. when a black man starring in a movie was too much for a lot of people to deal with. And a black man shown interacting with whites, and heaven forbid, white women.

His movies were groundbreaking because they intentionally pushed those buttons.

@robinbrenizer Remarkable what happens when someone who is experienced and fully qualified in every way becomes president.

And we have another one, equally qualified and experienced, but nobody seems to like her.

@lauren I should point out that Poitier's films were highly offensive to a certain segment of the U.S. population. It was a different time back then. Or was it?

@DrPsyBuffy Because it's the GOP. The GOP has its own definition of freedom, namely the freedom to oppress people they don't like. Whole swaths of this country are tired of being restricted to behaving in a civilized manner to every single citizen and they're very angry.

The past 70 years of increasing acceptance, inclusion, and civil rights has been like torture to them, every single day. And a black man in the Whitehouse was the last straw.

Your question has an answer. It's just not nice and not something we want to face.

@Craktok @atomicpoet Absolutely. I'd say more. But what good does that do? Users have zero power except the power to leave the platform.

@arstechnica

“Our cheap text generator doesn’t have good content filters, so it’s transphobic” isn’t a “malfunction”, it’s operating as designed.

This concept that ML should ingest all the crap in the world, and then somehow fix it afterwards, is neither safe nor possible.

@swordsjew And the GOP focuses on this while the world is starting its final burn. They throw every effort into preventing abortion when the fact is that most children born today will die before their time.

RT @mjs_DC
The upshot: Republicans are enlisting the federal judiciary in their battle to restrict abortion *in blue states where it remains legal,* targeting clinics' ability to prescribe or mail medication abortion to patients who currently have every right to use them.

@JohnShirley2023 Well, if I had a billion or even 100 mil, I would be doing this.

All I can say is they'd better be thinking very carefully and hiring experts in various fields to help think everything through long-term. I think trouble is coming that's much worse than most people imagine. Apocalypse is a dramatic word but I think it will apply.

Surviving what I believe is coming will take a hell of a lot more than a good bunker and food supply. Survival for decades with no outside support gets real complicated even if there are no "bad actors" trying to take it away from you.

The way I put it on my radio segment earlier this evening, was that a year ago there were five crypto ads on the big game, and the people pushing crypto were called geniuses. This year, there are no crypto ads at all on the big game. What does that tell you?

@annejefferson

Repeating something I mentioned on scicomm.xyz and offered as encouragement:

How's the United States Geological Survey doing under the current administration?

Per fresh anecdotal report by USGS lifer geologist and close relative who as a well-functioning scientist can't lie, very well indeed. Things are vastly better, from policies through budget. The past two years much nicer than what immediately came before.

More science is getting done.

@Craktok @atomicpoet I don't believe I said that. I never use the word protest. What I'm saying is to choose your battles. There's no point to protesting if your audience isn't listening. And if he is listening, bear in mind that he enjoys offending and irritating people.
