@ai6yr Yes, I knew that story, but it was good to review.
My perspective is fundamentally different from Oppenheimer's because the Ivy Mike test took place 7 months before I was born. I grew up with terms like megadeaths and MAD. My city was ringed with nuclear tipped ABMs. I eventually got deep into the subject.
Throughout my career, a wall of my office sported a huge color poster of Castle Bravo. Some people were shocked. I would say good, you should be. Everyone should be. The more who are shocked and keep this in mind, the better the chances we don't do something stupid.
Oppenheimer faced the fresh realization of what man could do. I grew up with it, lived it. I respect the power but I don't fear it. If humans are stupid enough to ever engage in global nuclear war, so be it. It certainly won't be me "pushing the button" and there's nothing I can do to stop it. It doesn't bother me, but I can clearly see how someone in Oppenheimer's position would be severely affected emotionally.
On the other hand he should have also realized that development of that technology was inevitable.
@ai6yr Yes, this is exactly how it is.
@Heather 10 demerits for failure to provide puppy pictures. ;-)
@clacke @dgoldsmith @ErinInTheMorn Indeed. And again demonstrating their lack of respect for democracy. They don't want democracy because, as a minority, they never get what they want so they have to take it by force and subterfuge.
Nevertheless She Persisted
A state senator of Nebraska, Machaela Cavanaugh has filibustered anti-trans legislation for 3 weeks. Even when she had strep.
I donated to her campaign. Link below the article.
@dgoldsmith @ErinInTheMorn So they're ashamed of what they're doing.

@dancingtreefrog @rbreich Right. And this is where the tax code we had in the 1950s and 60s would work nicely as intended.
It's interesting to note that this same period was the most prosperous the country has ever seen with the largest middle class and best standard of living.
Then we got lazy and started taking it for granted while the wealthy got busy influencing Congress to change the tax code.
Wow. Rest in peace, indeed. 🙏🏾 #BobbyCaldwell

Bobby Caldwell has passed away. His most recognizable song is "What You Won't Do For Love". His voice was so soulful that people to this day think he's a black man. His record company used that to their advantage by purposely removing his photo from his album cover. RIP Legend.

@rbreich Sure. Back in the 80s, non-compete agreements were standard procedure.
A Proud Boy kept his job as a Pentagon intelligence analyst after he joined the Jan 6 mob storming the Capito, even as he amassed a huge arsenal of weapons and began to think about kidnapping Jewish leaders and others he considered an existential threat.

@cobalt Somehow I manage with two fountain pens, one Zebra ballpoint, and one Pentel mechanical pencil.
You can never have too many coffee cups, but you can have too many pencils.
@atomicpoet That sucks. I would be very unhappy if that happened to me.
What a pain in the ass and waste of time. It takes a long time to get a machine set up just how you want.
@daniel @atomicpoet The battery has safeties that would prevent this unless you made significant modifications to the battery itself.
Also, tantalizing as it is, booby-trapping is illegal. If the thief suffers harm that can be traced to you, he'll sue for big money and win.
"They're MAKING THE KIDS TRANS!"
Umm, have you ever tried MAKING a kid do ANYTHING they don't want to do?
Every single day, for YEARS?
That they're going to get teased and probably bullied about?
That involves going to a therapist and doctor and talking about uncomfortable topics?
We're not talking taking ballet lessons here, or playing a sport, or learning an instrument, or doing their homework. This is every single time they put on clothes. Every single time someone calls them by their name. Every time they talk to their friends. Dealing with uncomfortable encounters with strangers. When the alternative is ... just doing nothing. Go with the flow, be like 90%+ of their friends and classmates.
By blaming Pence for the Capitol riot since the VP didn't throw out valid electors, Trump unintentionally admitted that Jan. 6 was (as has been obvious) his own fault.
