Anyways, here's a story to hopefully help convince people from talking about ELoon's purchase as a business decision. It was in a way, but not to make the social media platform into a directly profitable business.

“It is an attempt to quash any counter-disinformation efforts ahead of the 2024 election,” Jankowicz, a well-known expert on disinformation and extremism, told West Wing Playbook. “That seems very clear to me now.”

Re. the “dormant” accounts: Yoel Roth, Twitter’s former head of Trust & Safety, testified during a congressional hearing in February that “thousands or hundreds of thousands” of “counterfeit” Russian Twitter accounts targeting the U.S. are still active on the platform as part of an ongoing campaign.

I wrote about this, and how Russian accounts have gotten more sophisticated & harder to detect in the past few years.

After analyzing the sample of 200 tweets, I found a lot of indicators of coordination and possible inauthentic activity, including repetition of text, imagery, & video — with one particular video appearing in at least 10% of sampled tweets/QT’s —as well as recycled content from previous fires, and from previous disinformation campaigns surrounding “directed energy weapons.”

Information laundering and recycling is extremely common in disinformation campaigns.

I wrote about how outrage culture is helping racists monetize your clicks. It’s a pretty deep dive that breaks down the social psychology of why rage farming works and how we can stop the cycle — if we want to. #socialmedia #psychology #disinformation

Ever need to change an overhead lightbulb you can't reach and prefer not to use a ladder? Or a high lightbulb in a stairwell? Here's a quick and easy fix.

@ingalls Years ago, QSLing was much more frequent. If you were active or a contester, doing them every month was a real chore, stacks of mail, significant cost. That's not a complaint but it was serious work that took hours.

I reply to every QSL. I always send QSLs in an envelope because lots of damage occurs in the mail. I only start the process myself if there was something special about the contact. I always include SASE. If it's DX, I look on their QRZ to see what they require for QSLs. Some do cash, some do PayPal. IRCs are not a thing like they were in the old days.

I do LotW and eQSL. I don't respond to email QSLs and that's clearly stated on my QRZ page.

A strange thing I'm running into more and more is people who are on LotW but don't upload contacts unless you email them and request they upload your specific QSO. This seems bizarre. Your logging software will upload everything automatically if you let it.

@crash_course @Adam_Cadmon1 Understood. There are various kinds of swifts. Bird watchers sometimes call the chimney swift the "flying cigar" because of their shape.

@Radical_EgoCom@kolektiva.social In the U.S. you can't expect people to rise up against the people they most revere and want to be. Many Americans feel they are temporarily delayed rich people. They feel they have a right to be rich because it's America where, according to what they've been told since childhood, anyone can become rich.

Here's a triple green flash I photographed a few years ago from ESO's Paranal Observatory in #Chile, with the #Sun setting over the Pacific Ocean.

The atmosphere was strongly layered that day, creating this awesome effect. In fact, if you look closely you’ll see some horizontal bands in the #clouds, due to the way the light is refracted by these layers of air.

I've been complaining for a couple months about bad eggs. Not rotten eggs, fresh eggs, but eggs that tasted wrong. Some tasted terrible and would leave a solvent-like odor in the room. I love eggs and we go through a lot of them in this household. I usually eat soft-boiled eggs so the flavor is right in my face. Every week I've been trying different brands and types of eggs. Brown, white, fancy, "organic", expensive, everything I could lay hands on. I wondered if maybe I had changed and maybe eggs will never taste right again. Turns out it's not me. I just started a new dozen and tada! eggs that taste like they should. These are Walmart's (!) cage free white eggs in a traditional cardboard carton. Go figure. I'd sure like to know what was up with those eggs that smelled like paint thinner.

@crash_course @Adam_Cadmon1 I assume you mean the chimney swifts. I don't have a proven reason but assume it's the lack of insects. Chimney swifts love to fly. They fly all day long snatching insects out of the air.

Since they're most common and active (or used to be) in the late afternoon and twilight a lot of people around here think they're bats.

@georgetakei I’ve said it a million times. I will never understand how his campaign didn’t end when he mocked a disabled reporter.

@Free_Press Meadows is accustomed to wielding power, being the most powerful person in the room. He's out of his element in a courtroom, which is like a miniature monarchy where the judge holds all the power and you have none.

@Adam_Cadmon1 Yes, fireflies are fewer and fewer each year here in North Central West Virginia. 15 years ago, they were plentiful. I used to take time-exposure photos of them at twilight.

Now they are a rarity. Once in a while I'll see a single one.

All insects are down, actually. There used to be lots of Japanese stink bugs. Not anymore. I take walks in the evening and return without a single mosquito bite. They used to eat me alive. The lack of bites is a plus but it's wrong.

There used to be little flocks of chimney swifts zooming around at all hours of the day. You could always see them and hear them twittering as they fed on insects aloft. Their constant background twittering is now replaced by silence. The disappearance happened this year. They were plentiful a few months ago.

My son and I made a quick run to the Puget Sound seaside to take advantage of the 20 meter band this morning. Sitting here in Seattle we made a contact in the Czech Republic using less power than you'd use to light a lightbulb. #hamradio #amateurradio #ft8

Big Journalism and its hangers-on still believe Twitter (now called X by its sociopath owner) is where they have to be. And as he launches insult after insult to the press and what it does, they just stay there and support him. Today's case in point:

fortune.com/2023/08/21/elon-mu

It's clearly a combination of cowardice and calculation on the part of news orgs and the people who run them. Journalistic integrity doesn't even begin to factor into it. Which is sad, if not pathetic.
