Elusive
This is a red-headed woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus). I've probably posted this photo before, a long time ago. I took this photo in 2014 and am hoping to see one again this year. But so far, no luck.
"The gorgeous Red-headed Woodpecker is so boldly patterned it’s been called a “flying checkerboard,” with an entirely crimson head, a snow-white body, and half white, half inky black wings. These birds don’t act quite like most other woodpeckers: they’re adept at catching insects in the air, and they eat lots of acorns and beech nuts, often hiding away extra food in tree crevices for later. This magnificent species has declined severely in the past half-century because of habitat loss and changes to its food supply." - allaboutbirds.org

@Swede1952 Love it! She's a fixer upper. ;-)
Steve Herman, Voice of America chief national correspondent among other things, announced that he has stopped cross posting to X. That's worth a follow, right there!
@VisualStuart @w7voa Was already following him. I'll try to follow him harder.

A drone crushes a site of Russian invaders on the East bank of the Dnieper.
It is a new kamikaze drone called “Mammoth” that was tested by developers from Eskadron. A special feature of this drone is its increased warhead, up to 4 kg of explosives.
The test, as expected, took place with the participation of the occupiers. The drone successfully delivered the “gift” to the room where Russian soldiers were hiding in the village of Krynki, Kherson region.

@Dtl Bahahaha. ;-)
@johncarlosbaez Oh, much. After a month of Elmo and stuff from Right-wing politicians showing up in my feed un-asked for, I'd had enough.
Mastodon is much more to my liking.
@Dtl Hmm, so there was a previous Roman Empire 20,000 years ago? Who knew? And the stories were passed down by word of mouth for 18,000 years before they could be written in Aramaic. Amazing.
@johncarlosbaez @w7voa Thanks for the reminder. I stuck around for another month before bailing out. So it's been a year now.
@TruthSandwich@toad.social @lovelylovely Yeah, nope. Hahaha. Just having a Germanic name gets a raised eyebrow sometimes...hmm, sounds Jewish. (It's all Italians and Irish here.)
@TruthSandwich@toad.social @lovelylovely Exactly. Left anything is rare here. I don't know any far lefties here, only from interactions on social media.
We non-right-wingers have a hard time finding each other because around here it's wise to keep your mouth shut and blend in.
@lovelylovely @TruthSandwich@toad.social I know a few Biden supporters but we are a tiny minority.
@TruthSandwich@toad.social @lovelylovely Understood. I was throwing in my two cents. I would imagine the far lefties are equally brainwashed. They certainly appear to be.
@TruthSandwich@toad.social @lovelylovely The mindless Trumpers here in WV are trained to blame Biden for literally every problem. Corrupt, criminal Biden is all they talk about, parroting what Fox puts out.
And it never stops all day long. Since they're all reading from the same page, they're in agreement on everything with everyone around them, by default, which for humans is a big comfort zone thing.
Weizenbaum, 1985: “What the coming of the computer did, "just in time," was to make it unnecessary to create social inventions, to change the system in any way. So in that sense, the computer has acted as fundamentally a conservative force, which kept power or even solidified power where it already existed.”
I know I am like a week late, but I wanted to wait until I knew my candidate was going to win. (Live in a mail-in state, totally fine with this)
The reason this is great 1)It was a school board election 2)There was “Mom’s 4 Liberty” money supplied to the opposition. 3) None of the M4L candidates won.
This, again was for the F’ing school board! These people are crazy. I saw YouTube ads, my kids had ads on mobile games against the non-M4L candidates. Glad they did not triumph.
When he tried to get his case transferred out of Georgia state court to federal court, Trump argued he was entitled to do that because he was a federal officer performing his official duties. But now that he’s facing removal from state ballots under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which forbids officers of the U.S. who have taken an oath to support the Constitution but engaged in insurrection from holding federal public office, he’s claiming he’s not an officer of the U.S. He can’t have it both ways.
