"What radicalised you?"
Realising that Ronald McDonald statues are anti-homeless measures

OK, so the police made a mistake and did a license plate lookup using "AZ" (Arizona) rather than "AR" (Arkansas). That is understandable.

But why the guns and handcuffs? Can the officers articulate concrete reasons for this? (I seriously doubt that they can.)

Our police forces and officers are operating under the belief that that the officers are allowed to commit the most egregious abuses - including killing - if they have the most insubstantial grounds to believe they should be fearful.

That is wrong.

Aliens arrive: we have killed your leaders and taken control of your planet.

Us: oh thank god

Aliens: you are now citizens of ... Wait what

I saw this advert from 1956 on Instagram and can’t work out how a fridge from nearly 70 years ago basically has better features than the fridge I own now.

Indeed. We've flown the Ukrainian colors on our house since the beginning.

@mastodonmigration @mem_somerville @gbhnews @TucsonSentinel It's great to see BBC join the Fediverse with an instance!

Let's also shout out @restofworld, another early example of a publication with an instance

Breaking #FediverseNews

BBC >>> social.bbc/about

"The team at BBC Research & Development are researching social technologies and exploring possibilities for the #BBC. One part of our work is to establish a BBC presence in the Fediverse... This is an experiment - we will run it for 6 months, and then look at how much value it has provided"

In 2019, a panel of US judges permanently dismissed all 83 ethics complaints filed against Brett Kavanaugh around the time of his confirmation hearing without considering their individual merit.

EIGHTY-THREE ethics complaints filed against Brett were not investigated.

What crimes did he commit? Who rights did Brett violate?

EIGHTY-THREE PERSONS BRAVE ENOUGH TO FILE THE COMPLAINT. #corrupt #scotus

"The Tragedy of the Commons" was written by a eugenicist and was effectively debunked as ahistorical fantasy decades ago. More propaganda in the service of privatizing public space and resources. Pass it on. blogs.scientificamerican.com/v

The new strategy of the russians in Georgia🇬🇪

russians write bad evaluations to Georgian businesses, apartment renters, and with that they drop the rating on social networks. Or they sneak into apartments and destroy furniture and etc.
After that they ask for compensation.
Unfortunately, platforms do not allow Georgians to classify guests by nationality.

Russians are trying to lower the rating of Georgian businesses in order to promote their purchased and opened spaces.

I assume you get why it's not a nice thing to say that "slavery helped black people in some ways" but I think some people miss why this particular idea is *exceptionally* racist.

One of the main arguments to justify slavery was that it "civilized" black people by making us Christian & teaching us obedience to our "betters." Black people were "lucky" or "better off" as slaves.

It assumes that when people were enslaved they had no skills, nothing to offer, that they were basically animals.

I can only assume that the people who run #fossilfuel firms either:

a) have no children & don't care what happens to the earth once their gone;

b) do have children but believe (given their obscene wages) they like other rich elites' families will be able to buy themselves out of the problem....

At some point, they will 'wake up & smell the coffee (or burning trees)' but until then they're going to be no help & so need to be forced to recognise their culpability for the #climatecrisis!

If you're already tired of the drumbeat of news about relentless record heat, think how tired climate scientists are about warning about this for decades.

The people of Houston do not have an easy democratic solution to the problem of the state government taking over their local governance, their schools, their elections, without the consent of the people who live there.

I’m not sure what options they have as an essentially occupied city. Try to get the DOJ to intervene? Civil disobedience on a scale sufficient to hit the oligarchs’ bank accounts?

Y'all remember, before the internet, when people thought the source of stupidity was lack of access to information? Yeah. It wasn't that.
