It’s the middle of #winter in #SouthAmerica.
In #BuenosAires, where the average high on Aug. 1 is 14°C, it surpassed 30°C on Tuesday. Temperatures Tuesday rose past 35°C in numerous locations, including at elevations of above 1000 m bis 1400m in the #Andes foothills. In some cases, the temperature crested above 38°C after leaping from morning lows in the single-digits Celsius.

Never forget:
-Obama and Seth Myers roasted Donald Trump at 2011 White House correspondents' dinner
-Trump explored running for the 2012 Republican nomination in 2011. He made his first appearance at CPAC that year.
-Trump spent all of 2012 and the years up to 2015 spreading lies about Barack Obama's citizenship on Fox News. He also openly endorsed Vladimir Putin as the kind of leader that America needed. Freshman Senator Ted Cruz jumped happily into that bandwagon, as did Mike Huckabee, among many others who regularly appear(ed) on Fox News to this day. Oddly, internet search engines seem to have buried this info. You can still find mention of Mitt Romney condemning Putin in 2012, and be being laughed at by Obama.
-Trump had the headmaster of his childhood military school hide his academic records while demanding Barack Obama release his in 2011.
What we are experiencing now has been rehearsed for decades. Those points about Trump aren't even the first time he's practiced this shit. He has been compromised for a long time, and his sycophants are just as compromised.

Good old times, where are you? Todays topic: #sound
My laptop, now on #Debian #bookworm, (and #PipeWire "just works". That is, music plays either via the local speaker, a USB Audio device, a Headphone, a USB headphone (one of those used for video calls), one or two bluetooth connected speakers or, now also, via HDMI. Without a hassle. It even remembers things when I plug/unplug. It lets me easily (KDE, something in the task bar) change stuff around, and it also has no problem to have one source push to multiple of the targets - at home music usually goes to two at the same time. You can even easily adjust the delay that one of them needs.
No long fiddling with any setup, magic or tools, it just works.
(Compared to the customer laptop that runs a recent copy of the #Windows fuckup that #microsoft dares to name "Operating system" - that one is overburdened just dealing with local speaker and usb headphones and breaks on that often enough). No idea why anyone uses that crap system.
Pretty good article here, especially the last part about thousands of chemicals used in our foods that were "approved" but not by the FDA. And about the FDA's policy of never repeating a review. Many chemicals that were approved by the FDA were approved 50 years ago. Despite new evidence of problems, they won't review anything they've previously reviewed.
California Senate Committee on Health approves first-in-the-nation food chemical bill.
The five chemicals to be banned have been linked to many health risks including cancer, nervous system damage and hyperactivity.

Thanks for the information.
I worked alongside excellent AM news producers/reporters when I was a print reporter. They were among the first casualties of ClearChanneling and media consolidation, and I miss them still.

They have made no move to ensure that our cell phones can pick up radio signals of any kind, despite the fact that the FCC early on promised this feature.
Most people on this thread probably already listened to Katie Thornton's podcast, "The Divided Dial." I cannot recommend it highly enough.
In rural places w/ crap cell service, even as the shadow of its former self, replete w/ Christian Nationalist owners like Salem running things, AM radio is vital.
Here's a nice summation of Donald Trump. I wish I had written it.
It's stunning to shop for groceries today. The cheapest apples are $1.00 each??? I remember when apples were a nickel each. Russet potatoes were ten cents a pound.
To keep wages in line with the conditions in the 1950s, minimum wage should be around $24 an hour.
The Republicans oppose abortion, meaning they support having lots of kids. How can you raise a bunch of kids with food prices like this?
Better not have any kids. You can't afford one.
"The giant trucking company Yellow is on the verge of bankruptcy and is shutting down, throwing 30,000 people, including 22,000 Teamsters union members, out of work.
Just three years ago, the Trump administration overruled the Pentagon to certify that Yellow was critical to maintaining national security, qualifying it for a $700 million federal loan during the pandemic."
In acquiring church status, the Family Resource Council told the IRS it holds chapel services at its office, averaging 65+ people. But when @ProPublica called to inquire about service times, a staffer responded, “We don’t have church service.”
