‘People aren’t taking this seriously’: experts say 🇺🇸 US COVID surge is big risk.
The majority of COVID hospitalizations are among those 65 and older, although the share for children under 4 roughly doubled in 2022.
In the past week, COVID deaths rose by 44%, from 2,705 in the week ending 4 January to 3,907 in the week ending 11 January.

I wanted to take a few moments and apologize to many of my former students.
In the past I said the industry needs people who look at security as a vocation and an avocation.
I was wrong.
Have a life outside of this industry.
Have hobbies that have nothing to do with your computer.
Get outside.
The problems of the industry are not problems of people not working hard enough.
They are not problems of people not being "hard core" enough.
They are problems of education and resource prioritization.
I was wrong.
I am sorry.

Texas has nearly $33B in surplus taxes. We underpay teachers $13K below the national average. To give all 350K teachers a $5K raise would only run $1.75B. Do the math. #txlege

This week, a bailiff stopped me and acted as though I was in the wrong place as I walked through a portion of the courthouse that is restricted to attorneys and judges.
I'm an attorney. I was wearing a suit and conducting myself just like every other attorney in that area.
This is not the first time that has happened. I can think of several other instances in various counties where courthouse security has assumed that my black skin means I must not be an attorney.
I'm tired of it.
In the United States, it's that deeply embedded view that the constitutional amendments safeguarding freedom of speech mean that you can allow a hostile power to exploit it in order to damage your society. That is the biggest problem that the United States is facing.—Keir Giles on @radicalizedpod

One nice thing about American law is how you can often state what the law is in a neutral, unbiased, objective manner and it still sounds deranged and Kafkaesque.
"A U.S. government panel tasked with crafting federal sentencing policy on Thursday proposed curtailing the ability of judges to impose longer sentences on criminal defendants based on conduct for which they were acquitted at trial, a practice that the U.S. Supreme Court is considering addressing."
General Sherman's prophetic letter, written on the eve of the U.S. Civil War
We told yall that cops are so whatever abt murdering the citizenry that they dont even bother to make sure they have the right address. But yall said no charges, thats fine with us actually, gotta break a few eggs and all

When I got back home to my sky, I could immediately see all the satellites crawling across my sky again, and it was like a punch in the gut. They're still here, they're still bright, and they're still totally changing the night sky for everyone who can see it.
But now I understand why people aren't outraged by our night sky being destroyed for profit: they can't see this change, thanks to the light pollution that the vast majority of us live in.
