@jmw150 A well written static manual can "fake help desk work" and computer generated art has existed since the 80s.
If you look at what you're saying carefully you can see Karl Marx saying the same thing in the 19th century. None of this is particularly new and people will continue to get paid to waste time.
@jmw150 The three hundred million + population of the US survives off of stupidity like this.
What do you think interns majoring in business do?
@jmw150 I think you would be surprised at the trivia people are willing to pay other people to solve.
My girlfriend makes money just unscrewing up people's git repos.
@jmw150 Or at least someone who has read the manual.
@popolon @clacke @yogthos@mastodon.social
your argument is that the Turkish government agrees with you that the Uyghurs deserved the violence from the Chinese government?
My job involves ensuring that the internet works and works without censorship from *any* government. I should point out that the Turkish government has gone to extremes that most people thought no one would bother to in order to censor the internet for it's people. The Turkish government, as far as I am concerned as a technologist (and not an American, since I harbor an extreme distrust of my own government) is at war with its people.
@stux Where's the option for just giving everyone shell accounts and telling them to use git?
@popolon @clacke @yogthos@mastodon.social I'm well aware of our prison problem and it's something I talk about with my peers often.
That the US has moral failings does not at all mean China does not have them. Most importantly I cannot go to prison for something I write on qoto.org which as I understand is not the case in China.
@popolon @clacke @yogthos@mastodon.social We have movements like this in the US. But you don't see the government going through West Virginia and Texas jailing and killing people for being part of them.
Yes, in the past it the US government was involved with these people but that doesn't justify what the Chinese government is doing.
and if it did why aren't journalists talking about it? There are many news organizations who's existence is more or less justified by them countering mainstream culture and the government and none of them have argued against the existence of genocide by the Chinese government.
@popolon @clacke @yogthos@mastodon.social I really wish I could understand that or had a tool to automatically translate it. I tried to learn hanzi a number of summers ago because I was working on regulatory compliance software for some radio equipment and China was a country were really struggling with. But I have absolutely no idea what they're saying or how it's relevant.
@popolon @clacke @yogthos@mastodon.social I've been having a very difficult time understanding you but I'm going to try to summarize what I believe the most recent iteration of your argument is:
The US has planted or manipulated a religious leader in China and that excuses the violence the government has committed against its people.
I would like to point out that this kind of thing is considered so dangerous here that it is illegal and any member of the government gets in a lot of trouble just for suggesting that we attack our own people based on religion. In the west we've found this creates so many problems that many countries (including the US) consider this one of the fundamental principles of our government. That is: the government protects people of all religions, including and especially the most misguided ones.
@popolon @clacke @yogthos@mastodon.social Do the statistics come from the Chinese government? This wouldn't be the first time they've faked data. I had a professor who was an ex-patriot of China and would talk at length about this.
That there are buildings says nothing about the people. I could build a temple in Virginia today and that would change nothing about who lives there.

Email mastodon+swiley@swiley.net (this makes all of my computers beep and turn on an indicator light and is always the fastest way to reach me.) I was on octodon a while ago but abandoned my account. I've never been a member of gab or parlor.
If you’d like to learn to program I would consider the SICP [1] more or less the peak of American CS pedagogy (at least as far as beginners go) along with “The Practice of Programming” once you get through that.
I play ukulele, I’m ok at reading music and decent at improv. I learned from Walter Piston’s “Harmony” and some of Adam Neely’s videos.
My main phone is a pine phone so if I don’t pick up when you call the battery is probably dead, the modem is probably dead, or I’m currently swearing at calls/pulseaudio/alsa. I’d strongly recommend sending an email instead.
Dispite what my web page says I’ve stopped uploading my scratch projects to GitHub once I started to understand the basics of collaboration with git. I was using the flamegraph as gamification/motivation but it doesn’t work as well with feature branch/squash merge workflows so I just keep most things on my VPS until I’m happy with publishing updates.
