Już wiem, co mnie tak dobija we wrześniu. Choć pogoda letnia, to jednak przeszkadza mi już dojmująca cisza w polach. Od czasu do czasu usłyszy się jakąś sikorkę, dzięcioła, czy kowalika, ale to już nie to. Nie ma śpiewu skowronków, słowików, kosów, ćwierkotu wszędobylskich jaskółek, a jedynie kłócą się sójki... a wówczas od razu, człowiek uświadamia sobie, że kończy się kolejny rok i z kolejnym będzie jeszcze starszy. #przyroda #kochamwies #kochambycwieśniakiem

Just to give some perspective on cows if you don't come across them often - they're fucking huge.

The reason I've been scared of them is that they're not just huge but they have limited processing power and scare easily. They will trample things below their eyeline and panic about things above their eyeline; they also don't like loud noises or being approached quickly from the front (think about prey animals and instinct). The way to approach a cow is side on, slowly and with a calm voice.

Now, I say this because I was in a field on my own and incredibly vulnerable but I wanted to check their physical form and to see what kind of temperament they had. It turns out they're at the stage where they don't have much youthful curiosity and are prepared to be more defensive if necessary - so I took the photo by a gate I could leap over if I needed to before they got to me. Even if they were feeling friendlier (and in a few days they will be when they're used to visitors) I have to conscious than when a cow that weighs approximately one fuckton wants to be friendly it may nudge with its head or rub with its side. Human + fence + cow usually doesn't end well for human.

So if you're in a field with a cow what do you do? Frighten them away if you have to - raise your arms and voice. If they're too close back away fast as you can but keep them in eyeline. Get to a fence line if you can and move side on from the cow. Do not lie down. Do not lower yourself to seem less threatening. Never ever get between a cow and a calf (or ANY animal and its young) because that is a fastlane to a crushing.

One day I will remember to bring my camera and properly document this beautiful underpass but for now here's a snippet.

As a blind Mastodonian who is made happy by alt text every day, I'd like to request anyone who feels inclined or able, to post and describe insects. I've really enjoyed the occasional alt text describing flying and crawling things.

The spacecraft #OSIRIS-REx is on its way back to Earth from its many years long journey to asteroid #Bennu.

In just a few days, on 24 September, it will deliver the asteroid sample back to Earth.

This is a complicated manoeuvre. The spacecraft will not land, but will release instead the asteroid probe via a capsule.

What concerns me the most, by far, about SARS-CoV-2, is that, in the absence of better vaccines and therapeutics, we are heading towards an inexorable reduction in global population health.

Even if the virus maintains the same virulence, the data we now have on the average rate of re-infection, combined with the data we have on the likelihood of sequelae of infection and Long Covid with each infection, makes it a near-certainty that a growing percentage of the world will continue to become chronically ill and / or disabled.

The pandemic is often framed as a 'mass-disabling' event, but what I think most people don't understand is what that actually entails. It means pressure on global healthcare services that will be detrimental to everyone, not just those suffering from Covid-related illnesses. It means significant logistical and supply-chain problems. It means economic recessions. It could well mean an increase in civil disorder.

Fundamentally, it means a drop in quality of life for all. Reducing the transmission of this virus should be the primary global priority right now. If we don't work this problem with the solutions we have (cleaning indoor air, fast-tracking better vaccines and therapeutics) everyone loses. Everyone!
