NZ politics

@dn @strypey interesting. So it wasn't always like this?

In my corner of the world, the focus of modern political discourse has remained on emotive issues and personalities. I think the modern concept of a federal government results in an intangibles-only view for the populace, which is great for misdirection. That is much harder to do at the provincial level or lower, but that is only useful if the federal government doesn't dominate the domain.

@RememberUsAlways @ianbetteridge No. The joke is that Musk himself is guilty of this. Digging holes = Boring Company. Freight company = SpaceX. Etc.

This post is intended to document a social problem i.e. the delegitimization of other people's ideas and refusal to argue.

🟢 I replied to a controvertial opinion with my own opposite controvertial opinion and provided a scientific publication to support it and for further insights.
🟡 No reply but legitimately unfollows me.
🔴 A third person replies that my post was "stupid" and immediately blocks me.

My recipe for a sustainable mix of RSS feeds that don't overwhelm with content: subscribe to many feeds updated infrequently and few updated often. It's applicable also to following users on Mastodon.

@stavvers There's some irony in the fact that while your point is well made and completely valid, it is itself, by necessity, unsolicited advice (though not in response to anyone).

if all the effort to shoehorn into the server environment had gone into shoehorning a high-level language into the browser ... Sure, but is it / will it be first-class in the browser like JS?

The most significant change in email closings over the past ten years is the progression from

@TheOldGuy I always wonder if any of the world citizens objecting to Russia's or Iran's (or Turkey's) actions are world citizens any more than the World Series is a world tournament.

People, including me, say we want to be successful, but we really don't. We want to fail but blame others for our failure. Then we get the satisfaction of 'knowing' that we 'could have been a contender' if only those 'bad others' had not got in our way.

Why are ethics questions always like:
"is it ethical to steal bread to feed your starving family?"

And not:
"is it ethical to sell bread when families are starving?"

told my daughter to watch her attitude. she said for complaints about her attitude, contact the manufacturer. well-played, kid.

discord has ruined the definition of the word "server" for potentially an entire generation of people

Erlang achieves Dan Ingalls' Smalltalk goals

Choice in software systems design seems hampered by the scaffolding needed to use shared memory and message passing between threads and processes. Dan Ingalls: "An OS has the things not there in the language. There shouldn't be one.". It was about but the VM seems to solve that, with shared binaries between processes and transparent message-passing across nodes. Maybe your language and database should run on the ?

One of the cleverest tricks corporate PR has come up with is to make public statements pretending to support social and environmental campaigns, while still contributing to the problems those campaigns target, if it saves or makes them money. Where in the late 90s and early 2000s it was possible to build broad coalitions with anti-corporate activists from a wide range of political positions, social and environment campaigners can now be written off as allies of the same corporations they fight.

"Morton invites growers and breeders to work with this mix to create new varieties for their farms or for the general public, while stipulating that nothing derived from it may be patented or protected from others’ use in any way. This strategy, originated by software developers, is now known as copyleft (as opposed to traditional copyright). Morton has adopted it to keep his varieties and their derivatives in the public domain as a protected commons. Seeds as nature’s software! Copyleft has the potential to return to free use such shared resources as our plant heritage that rightfully belong to all of us. As Morton proclaims, “Adaptive breeding cannot occur under a system of restrictive ownership.”"

While we’re all talking about web servers that should change their name, I’d like to propose #Cowboy, the #Erlang web server.

It was named that because the other one is named #Apache, and the connection between these is *super* offensive.

For details, search for “Loic” on this mailing list archive. WARNING: the entire thread is about a different also-offensively named piece of software, and there’s a lot of bad takes. erlang.org/pipermail/erlang-qu
