Just learned that “stochastic parroting” is the technical term for what ChatGPT does, which makes so much more sense than AI

@jalefkowit well, it may be worth it in a place like San Francisco :-)

too many people driving around in big cars alone.

Dear #syncthing,

You know I love you, but using XML as a config file format is criminal. I mean, it's better than binary, but that's about it.

Dropbox on Android has become very annoying as of late. They hide where the download folder actually is, when I want to point a widget at a text file in it that holds my todo list.

Anyway, I've just set up Syncthing! It took a bit of fiddling to get going (my dudes, "tcp://" is NOT a sensible URI prefix. I'm pretty sure the prefix is for something higher than the OSI Transport layer! But I digress)

Anyway anyway, it was relatively straightforward to download and set up on my ASUSTOR NAS, and set it to sync a folder I'm already sharing by SMB.

tl;dr: my phone now automatically synchronises that directory (including my todo list) to and from a shared network folder on my local network. It doesn't go through the internet, or use anyone else's infrastructure or services, and it costs $0. Brilliant! :D

@maddler I see a lot of posts on (self-) hosted note-taking. Are people really able to do the same things on smartphones and tablets/laptops, and hence need sync? Or are the other devices just for backing up data? Can't one get away with for everything ?

Any suggestion for a decent #selfhosted alternative to Google Keep?
Was considering #StandardNotes but it doesn't look like there's an admin interface (or even config options) for basic features. At the very least I'd like to be able to disable users' registration.

I can't blame certain admins for going from "fun pleroma instance" to "we need to be strict in order to maintain federation" but: consider that forcing your users to be inauthentic for the sake of Mastodon admins who cancel you in bad faith, is not healthy for your space to grow into itself.

You'll be held to higher and higher standards and still end up blackmailed by those you're trying to please, and you'll lose good users.

Disqordia went through this too, I once tried to be the Good Admin™, keeping up a perfect instance block list, pulling users aside to ask them not to do certain things, and it really didn't make Disq any better or prevent anyone from disliking us because they don't actually care that we block who we're "supposed to" or take the actions they want us to.

Dont fall for it. Just be yourself and let your users be themselves. Even when there's issues. Even when there's arguments.

@harshal @kevinjkircher apart from the question raised on the method, it doesn't make sense to heat using electricity if the electricity came from a coal- or gas-fired power plant.

@kevinjkircher i looked at the paper- it's a top down review of asthma rates by state correlated with natural gas penetration. Did I get that wrong? Wouldn't it have been more convincing if they'd looked directly at a sample of people with asthma, converted their cooking fuel and measured changes in asthma rates??

Eight years ago I witnessed one of the most epic sunsets ever. The crazy thing is, this is actually looking east. That’s how much the sky lit up that evening. The entire thing was ablaze in color.

RT @Rudcher
Google Maps changed its URL from "https://maps [dot] google [dot] com" to "https://google [dot] com/maps".
Looks like it's not a big deal, but when you grant the location permission in your browser you now grant it to the whole #google [dot] com domain. 🤨

@tetrislife @skroobler

My concern over a flat file platform is that as you amass statuses over time, especially if you like to post & boost a lot, performance with flat files may be problematic when it comes to searches and what not, basically scalability may be an issue.

Even ActivityPub microblogging systems designed with single user instances in mind like GoToSocial & Takahe all use databases. Yes, you're adding complexity but often you get better performance so I'm not so sure...

@skroobler I guess this has to be a hard-nosed decision. Does Akkoma run lighter than Epicyon, which uses files for storage? I would go for an Erlang stack over a Python one, but Epicyon is ... interesting.
@deltatux

@Krash I intend to. But how likely is it to be worse than server-shoehorned-to-desktop Linux/BSD and obese+opaque Win/MacOS?

@drewtoothpaste
That's like this habit people have when they share their projects, of prepending their sentence with "I was bored and I made this”.
Why doing this? This is obviously not true: you spent time and effort on this to achieve this result. It's great to have an idea and actually pursuing it to completion!

when you see someone describe a creative endeavor they undertook as "quarantine" or "lockdown" it's a good reminder that doing something creative is not just unusual, but embarrassing for many people, and they feel obligated to explain it was the result of adverse conditions

The Yard Sale model is a very basic thought experiment that explains why the rich get richer and why a free market like the one we have is not fair (or free).
