@akareilly also, the vast majority of people making those statements don’t know shit about compilers or operating systems or machine code anyway.

@akareilly

I hate programming so much 😭

People don't get that since I'm the world's best programmer. They're like "why don't you program more?" Because I hate it.

As far as open source software developers not taking feedback specifically, I've argued against that refusal:

So in that specific fight, I'm with you.

Learning the basics of how code works and how to code simple things is all I'm asking; as you point out, the difference between knowing how it's constructed vs having the time, resources, skill level to do everything from scratch always.

Code can also be copied so there's a degree of cooperation and standing on each other's shoulders that's possible in code that's not possible to the same extent in textile:

I thought we were talking about something else. When I'm like "everyone should learn how to code", it's not to give credence to your basic GitHub issues sourpuss. I'm with you on that one. Instead, it's a reaction to the veneer of network path dependent silos like Instagram, Hacker's News, Facebook, YouTube, how our infastructure is being gatekept by modern-day Priests of Ra who are stacking their castle walls on layers and layers and layers of abstraction and toolkits, locking everything down and wrapping your basic everyday tools in hard plastic and planned obsolescence. It's a celebration of how coding can be a foundation for other fields and philosophies, how it can help us reason about our interactions with nature, others, and ourselves. How market capitalism is a broken program and how we need the best minds of our generation to set things straight before we burn the world. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Stanford: we discourage postdoc unions. Moreover, you guys have the highest salary in the Bay Area!
Meanwhile, my wife at UCSF, with a postdoc Union: earns 300$ more, has twice the paid leave days and matchable 401k.
Unionize! If companies spend hundreds of millions to deter unionizing is because it works.

I closed an eight-year-old issue on a Sandstorm.io app tonight. Maybe not the quickest fix in history, but we didn't forget about it. =P

Back in the 80s, Peoplesoft's marketing team came up with a fascinating slogan for their print ad campaign:

"Every piece of software has a set of beliefs built in. Make sure the one you pick believes in the same things you do."

If I have to prove I'm not a computer by identifying traffic lights and busses, perhaps we're not quite ready for self-driving cars.

@mapto yeah yeah, asking about past imperialism is whataboutism. And what is avoiding talking about past imperialism? Denial?

"I want people to like me."

No, you want to be someone people like. There's a really big difference.

@mapto nice interpretation. But actually, forgetting yesterday is unacceptable; or would you be fine with Putin spouting democracy the day after the Ukraine conflict ceases? Imperialism has to be acknowleged, apologized and compensated for; the same way the West expects Russia to.

@jaromil it goes beyond that. Entire rivers have been rendered unfit for any life, by pollutants from viscose factories and dyeing and tanning units.

I will tell you the same thing I have told everybody else I have come across that somehow has in in their mind that bicycles are an answer to anything. Only a small minority of the population really enjoys riding a on a regular basis. Beyond that small percentage, the people who ride bikes do so because they feel they have no other better options, or they only do it during the nice summer/fall days for recreation. The problems with are they do not shield you from the elements, they limit the range you can comfortably travel, it is nearly impossible to bring home a couple bags of groceries or any significant purchase from a bricks-and-mortar store on a bike, and they offer virtually no protection if you are in a collision with a larger vehicle.

But more to the point, when Americans feel threatened with the idea that they might be forced to use a bicycle for basic transportation, they blame the "damn liberals" (even though a lot of people who are liberal on most other issues hate the idea of using anything other than a car to get around with every fiber of their being, though they will not say that to their liberal friends). So if and when Americans get it in their heads that "the libs" are going to try to force them to give up their car and ride a bike, they will vote for the worst Republican running, because they know that one thing Republicans will NEVER do is try to take people out of their cars, they are too beholden to big oil. Nobody ever wants to talk about it this way, but I will bet that close elections have been lost because a certain percentage of voters sees the Democrats as the party that wants to take their car away, and they might even be right to feel that way about some of the far-left elements in the party. Viewed that way, it's not a win/win, it's a lose/lose because it helps elect people who will never expand and who will continue to support the fossil fuel industry, and who are just terrible people in general.

@strypey you aren’t the only one. The media environment/quality of reporting has changed a lot over the last 15 years. That drives a lot of the narrative. We aren’t going to get that level of discourse unless we organise and push for it through strong collective community voices and refuse to tolerate less. People with platforms need to stand for basic values of decency and civil constructive discourse on issues and not remain neutral or silent.

#ShowerThoughts: most apps are just obscenely limited web browsers that only work with one website.

@mapto what about the looting in the preceding centuries, on which the 21st century is built? The present human-rights-spouting world order hasn't come for free, and definitely hasn't paid for it itself.

For organizing #EmacsConf 2022, we have a 325k Org file in a private repo (talk info, contact info, volunteers, etc.) and a 331k Org file in a public repo (tasks, mail merge templates, links, notes - emacsconf.org/2022/organizers- ). They were handy for managing 39 talks on 2 streams semi-automatically. =)

@strypey You seem to be arguing that hateful and abusive comments are just a valid part of political discourse. The negative of "XXX is a great leader" would be "XXX is a poor leader", or even "XXX is the worst leader ever", not "XXX is a <obscene epithet>".

I don't think that had Jacinda's most ardent supporters tempered their enthusiasm, the folks screaming that face masks and vaccine passports were just a stepping stone to totalitarian rule would have done likewise.
