@Wabu @jeff Technically speaking, wouldn't it be possible to fork the mastodon server to insert ad spot as regular message, the same way Twitter does it?
Something with an #ads tag to let the user know what they are looking at.
The mastodon clients would simply display it.
This would be a "read only" change so it wouldn't require a protocol standard change.
@Wabu @jeff re payments - I think there should be a built in standard way for a server instance to publish a payment link then apps (as well as browsers) could have an easy way to direct payments. I personally would be fine with a payment that split in some way between the app developer and my server instance.
Perhaps using the Payto URI ? (https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/rfc8905/)
I'm generally against ads as a revenue model, especially for media because of the ways advertisers can influence editorial/ moderation choices. Totally opposed to surveillance advertising in all its forms, of course.
But..
@nathan
> admins trying to push ads from their instance will be swiftly defederated
Only if they're pushing ads out to other instances. What if they just display contextual ads to accounts on their instance?
@jeff okay this is probably a unpopular opinion but fuck it: I wouldn't mind to see ads if this means it would help to run the server. Mastodon should implement ads with a easy opt in/opt out model (for the users) that server admins can choose to use on their instance.
And maybe a easy one click donation implementation in the official app over the app store. Like I heard from a friend who works on apps: "With every additional click you will loose people that are willing to pay."
Not going to lie, the more I play on #SteamDeck the more I think we may be actually headed toward the year of the #Linux desktop via gaming & pros. Looks @system76 ;)

@strypey this is interesting. I am sure there are many languages without a script, but a language that was never written probably wasn't meant to be typed in either! That brings in voice messages. Or IPA phonetic codes, if native speakers find it tractable. Or a phonetic shorthand, if they find it readable.
People around #Mastodon used (still use?) to discuss on Discord instead of something like #Matrix, #IRC or #XMPP.
Mastodon itself is still developed on GitHub and so are third party clients and other related software.
And now with the wave of new users even more Mastodon-related projects run on GitHub and Discord.
It's not like Mastodon ever really joined the culture of #FreeSoftware and #decentralization but they used it to their advantage for one use case and that's it.
They will tell you that their choices were dictated by convenience, but convenience has always been a Trojan horse.
@post It was not accidental.
@lightweight Exacrly. And now put yourself in the place of wealthy capitalists reading this, knowing it’s true, and hell bent on proving it otherwise with billions in their war chest and the threat we and these spaces face becomes clear. (And yet I still see folks celebrating every billionaire, venture capitalist, and Silicon Valley corporation that joins or otherwise expresses an interest in the fediverse as a win… like sheep celebrating the arrival of the wolves.)
The fact you're looking at this on an ActivityPub-enabled Fediverse app demonstrates that a community of focused individuals can create a global-scale network around an open standard that rivals (or, frankly, beats) pretty much anything capitalism could create, even at its 'best'.
And these communities create without profit motive - just because they share a vision and think it'd be a good thing. All they require is sustainability, not exploitative profit.
I think that's worth celebrating.
Wow, after 25 years of Unix experience, I learned that you can filter output in #less.
Press ampersand (&) and enter a regex to show only lines matching the regex.
Press ampersand (&) and then exclamation mark (!) to apply an inverse filter.
That's it, I've spent too much time with no good results on this today, and I feel I have better things to do.
I've hit the limit of what I could accomplish with Rust without actually investing time learning how to think in it and how to structure solutions to fit its model adequately.
This experiment ends with me getting 8 days further with Awk than Rust in problems that have an advent-of-code shape.
Whatever that means.
The world is probably going to end soon. I know this because there’s an #Erlang post on the front page of HN with 25 replies and not a single one so far has complained about the syntax.
Someone should go in there and do the needful before the precarious balance of forces holding reality together collapses.
@slothrop then we disagree.
All advertising is censorship of better products and ideas - why else pay? It gives power to those with money, to obscure offerings which would otherwise rise on their merits, through the reports and recommendations of trusted friends, colleagues and members of interest communities.
The purpose of advertising is to distort this, undermine autonomy and get people to do what the advertiser wants by whatever means.
If it's paid for it should not be trusted.
@gpowerf Windows. Performance. Stability.
hmmm
@strypey did/does Maori have a script? I didn't find anything in Unicode.
@fatboy @moddedbear even stranger, try uninstalling it. On Android One, it gets re-installed on a reboot!
@strypey you probably know it, but this quote is applicable in literally every place in the world where the native populace was kept around for exploitation! colonizers have devastated so much to position the world as it is currently.
