u have to be very quiet when hacking so the coputer doesn't hear you. thats why its called ssh

@galdor The story of the core-js dev is heartbreaking. Not because he didn't receive proper funding but because of all the hatred he had to endure over time when asking for help.

He should have ceased his work on core-js a long time ago, and he should do so now. The environment he provided his work for free for doesn't deserve any free work. That was his life-mistake. Unfortunately he repeats the same mistake over and over _and over_ again.

That is the broken "open-source" philosophy of the Web which is nothing else than cheap extraction of dev work by corporations to build their billion-dollar businesses upon.

Either work on stateless services, or make state your career and have clear boundaries. Everything in between will make you upset.

Recruiters can use automated scripts to filter out if my resume is applicable and nobody bats an eye

But I write a simple script that automatically applies to jobs that are relevant to me and everybody loses their minds

Most of us in the US have to go to some form of a Department of Motor Vehicles to obtain a small card that lets us identify ourselves to US authorities.

Perhaps, if we want to make progress on climate change measures, we should separate our state-provided identity cards from our ability to operate a hydrocarbon-combusting motor vehicle.

Just saying.

Oh the irony...

"This document discusses centralization in Internet protocols and relates it to consolidation of power, explains why both are undesirable, identifies forces that contribute to them, catalogues limitations of common approaches to decentralization, and explores what Internet standards efforts can do.

Are you new to the #fediverse? Do you want to see more polished versions of fediverse software like Mastodon, and the third-party apps you can use with it? Can you afford to put some money into efforts to pay a living wage to the specialists who maintain and improve that software? Or put time and organisational skills into getting such efforts up and running? If so, please do. Otherwise, the 'verse, like the web before it, will be vulnerable to capture by Vulture Capitalists.

The problem with capitalism is how it distorts the natural balance of Fucking Around & Finding Out by creating a class that is allowed nearly infinite fuckery with zero finding out

I think the problem is that Twitter's algorithm shows you people similar to you and most of you have terrible personalities.

@bitsplusatoms @gn
I always find it super helpful until I notice that they do not want a hole, but a hanger; not a hanger, but their stuff put away neatly, not to…

@Yonks with many servers federating judiciously, it doesn't make sense for posts or replies to be broadcasted; so, public posts only get sent to followers and to tagged accounts (who haven't blocked the sender). It is usual to open the starting post (in a separate browser window, if need be) to see all the replies.

If you’re planning on hosting your own instance on the fediverse, you might wanna take the time to think about not using #Mastodon.

It’s a really heavy, and resource-consuming, piece of software. Plus your server’s drive will get filled really fast (even though you can clear the cache on a regular basis).

If you’re, even slightly, into #SustainableDesign, please consider using Pleroma / Akkoma. A single-user instance can run on a RasPi!

If you want a slick interface (which you don’t have on Mastodon anyway :blob-grin: ) we’re always improving #Mangane. :blob-lurk:

Or you can use one of the many existing clients since #Pleroma & #Akkoma are compatible with Mastodon’s API.

@taylorlorenz Remember the history of Mastodon. It was not built in the face of Musk buying twitter. It was built by people who could not be on Twitter safely even when Jack was in charge. Decisions like no text search and no reblogging were in specific responses to the abusive behavior that led Mastodon's creators to do the hard work of setting up an alternative in the first place.

These pre-April 2022 users who still own the majority of large instances and are the active developers of the software did not want a place for Journalists - many would have found the prying and data aggregation journalist do on social media exceedingly distasteful.

unless things change Mastodon will never have the broadcast vibes of Twitter which emphasized views and interactions. This social network emphasizes the building of direct relationships and to use it successfully you need to be ready to spend far more social capital developing trust and reputation then the equivalent Twitter account.

Twitter under Jack Dorsey really catered to journalists and politicians because they brought in lots of views, and it became a great place to not only put out a story, but to develop one as well. Mastodon was designed by people who didn't want their social media interactions on the front page of the New York Times. For that reason, I suspect that journalists, news makers, and politicians will remain on Twitter in spite of Elon Musk. They are to Twitter what live sports has become to cable TV - the one use that a new technology cannot easily disrupt.

@taylorlorenz@mastodon.social @PieterPeach@mastodon.social well I heard that Washington post is putting up a server so you should tell them you want a server that has this instead of Mastodon!

@maigol@mastodon.la @aspensmonster wait till you uninstall the calculator app and find it back after reboot. Android One, if it matters.

"We can pay for some useful tools, such as GSuite for the Steering Committee, PowerBI for business analysis and a Zoom account for Events."

metatalk.metafilter.com/26249/

This makes me sad. There are human-respecting, hosted replacements for all of these (eg Matomo, Meet.coop). I can shrug my shoulders when people make gratis use of corporate platforms. But why give them money when you could get roughly the same benefits *and* help fund ethical replacements (like MetaFilter itself) :(

People are all "but all ChatGPT can do is mash together babble based on half-remembered things other people said once; it's not really a human-equivalent AGI".

My brothers in cynicism, how do you think most human thought works?

accidentally wrote "saad" instead of "saas" in a text to my partner; they immediately coined "Software as a Disappointment"

and honestly, where is the lie

@WanderingGaia we have abundant cheap energy? It is what is wasted in gyms and jogging and racetracks.
