@governa does HaikuOS support PWA? If yes, good things are said about Pinafore (maintainence mode) Soapbox FE etc.

Shoutout to @eli_oat for the paper recommendation. Programmers, put your fists in the air for Peter Naur's "Programming as Theory Building."

If it didn't intrude on you personally, wouldn't you be just like "the people"?

What does a non-Mastodon Fediverse instance with a reasonable admin lack?

@gwynnion
Balance. The word is balance. And choice. It will become what it should be at the direct engagement of its users. If you want to force it into a particular form than it will become no different than Twitter. It was successful and it will continue to be successful, but many do not want anything more than to be spoonfed outrage. And there are "journalists" who are happy to do so. It is inherently dumb on their part not to post their work everywhere to gain exposure.

@gwynnion People of my generation were encouraged to think all politicians are the same and there's no point in being engaged, and here we are.

If DataFarming social platforms were like restaurants, you'd have to go to the particular restaurant that's holding your friends captive. You'd have to share a table with salespeople, who constantly interrupt your conversations trying to sell you stuff based on what you've been talking about. While trying to ignore QAnon followers, crypto-cultists, and other assorted nuts who the restaurant send to your table to rant at you, hoping that enraging you will make you stay longer and buy more stuff.

@alex I remember SuSE YAST upgrading the libc it itself was using, with predictable results! That was when I moved to Debian.

Something I've not seen mentioned by @atomicpoet and others when talking about #CalcKey is that it supports server administrators displaying you #ads by pushing them into your timeline.

This can apparently be turned of in user settings in CalcKey, and is documented more by the MissKey project (from which CalcKey is forked):

@alex ah, never thought of it that way. Wikis have versioning too, if inlining the elisp.

The feeling when posting #Emacs packages to Emacs Wiki like we used to post them to news:gnu.emacs.sources – no git, no website, nothing.

I've never seen a text describe itself so honestly and so accurately ;)

@cbt @jynersolives Firstly, according to Eugen's LInkedin profile, he is the current CEO of Mastodon (see attachment). So I don't know how I would have in any way "framed" that. And I don't see what is wrong with that.

linkedin.com/in/gargron

He is btw. the only CEO and there is no deputy or general manager other than him for the Mastodon gGmbH.

Secondly, Mastodon gGmbH *is* a corporation with limited liability and a non-profit status, which means: no taxes. The non-profit status was assigned based on their statue. Eugen is the sole proprietor of this corporation. He can sell it, close it or do with it what whatever he wants - the only issue is that taxes have to paid in certain circumstances which is the default for every other company.

The Mastodon gGmbH owns the word trademark "Mastodon" and also the figurative trademark which is the official logo with the elephant on the left. The trademark policy clearly states that you are not allowed to use the trademark (i.e. the word "Mastodon") if you use any modified software which includes features not already included in the official Mastodon software.

So I assume that I framed everything correctly. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

@louis

Honestly, if they find that people just want a default server, all that tells me is that they have done a very poor job in communicating one of the biggest strengths of the platform to new users - building collaborative feeds through your server community.

@creepy_owlet @louis You know what people who don’t care that much use? Twitter.

Round-robin the default instance and you solve the problem. Heck, you don’t even need that. Look at how @ivory does it. Beautiful experience that gives you options while also educating you. Or are you going to tell me the Tapbots guys don’t grok design?

@louis i boosted this even though you have "emacs" in your domain name. this is the kind of diversity and solidarity we need on the fediverse. :cat_giggle: 💜 /hj /lh

I’ve held the view for a long time that instances that are an outgrowth of extant communities are ideal, because they’re going to have their own ideas about how to run things coming out the gate, and they’re going to be coherent to those people if nobody else. The fediverse is truly an exercise in local governance online in this respect.

@null that’s strange, because for me, this medium size instance I am on is the only service that really took off in a long time.

Because "someone takes an informed decisions and others in the social circle follow" actually works.

It’s how communities work.
@volkris @louis @downey

@louis I think it's funny how the verbiage in the screenshot is barely intelligible, possibly because he was trying to get under a character limit, which just goes to show how stupid character limits are, and a good reason for people to use something other than

I don't *think* he's really taking a stance on mid-sized instances here, though. More a stance about what the average users wants.
