Yep. UI/UX is always the stumbling block for this kind of thing.
It's a crime that we don't have a norm of encrypted email messages, but the UI was never developed to make that happen.
Solutions we've had in academia for decades are just never mainstreamed because the UI never implements them.
It's a longstanding tragedy in tech.

#Epicyon seems to have a hashtag swarm, of the tags people you follow have used recently.
@stux
@glyph @ryancordell @anildash
Ahhh... Censorship. Helping exclude the law-abiding from public participation.
Good to see you're raising your kid right, though.
A thought into the void: #Mastodon and other #Fediverse clients need a filter option based on number of hashtags to avoid hashtag abuse.
I'm seeing posts with something like twenty irrelevant hashtags today from trolls.
ActivityPub spam, onboarding
This kind of thing is why I really wish ActivityPub had focused on users, not instances, and included Web of Trust sort of functionality in its core.
ActivityPub spam, onboarding
@volkris interesting view. Web of trust-ness seems to be there in #SecureScuttlebutt (it "gossips" content from friends and friend-of-friend, friends are cryptographically verified by design).
Per your view, #Zot / #Nomad would work well on the user-in-control front (although whether their #Hubzilla / #Streams UX implementations work for users is questionable).
ActivityPub spam, onboarding
@olives I have not seen too many approaches being available. There is open-house #ActivityPub, clique-y #Zot / #Nomad or this invite system which seems to be in between.
Scale isn't something a federated system should care about. That and vulnerable groups are a non-tech problem, they are not nails for the tech hammer.
It is fine for somebody giving out an invite to be liable in that sense, it will make sure invites are used judiciously.
Stack Overflow wants me to prove I'm a human being. Before I do that, I want it to prove it's a computer, not a human trying to waste my time.
ActivityPub spam, onboarding
#ActivityPub #spam seems to be spreading nowadays. It isn't new, I moved away from my previous instance because it didn't have active mod volunteers.
#Snikket's idea of invites (#XMPP, not AP) seems like a good way to both control spam and onboard users. Mods can rate-limit account creation by judiciously creating invites. Users can generate 1 invite each, but can expect to also get banned if their invitee is a spammer. User-invited users would have a real account to bootstrap their connections.
“If we only attract people who already care about decentralization, our ability to make decentralization mainstream becomes that much harder.”

No, we don't want to make decentralization mainstream. We want to make the mainstream decentralized. We need to show people the benefits of that as we're onboarding. Not herd term into a digital stadium with a mattress each.
People in security and computing have been saying for years - there's no cloud. There's just someone else's computer.
Right now, there's no AI. There's just someone else's work.
Stop calling generative text and image programs AI. It's inaccurate and insulting. They are just the evolution of corporate creative theft that's been going on as long as media corporations have existed.
Sad to see #Pinafore put out to pasture. Thanks for all your work on this over the years @nolan. Totally agree with...
"I also think that Pinafore accomplished many of the goals I had in mind when I originally wrote it. At the time, Mastodon only had a multi-column UI, which many users found overwhelming and confusing. Pinafore demonstrated that a single-column layout could be a viable alternative, and since then, Mastodon has defaulted to a single-column layout."
I know some like to, but I prefer not to get my news from social media. Unfortunately, filtering it out is difficult. I can use keyword filtering to filter out links to the most popular new sites, but a lot still gets through. So, if you're just posting sharing a news item and your post is just the title and a link and you're not talking about it yourself, would you please consider #news to your post, so I can easily filter it out?
@pere
> public keys as ID's
> directory mapping ID's to current location
#Hubzilla does this in its #Nomad protocol. In its #Streams incarnation, it seems to present #ActivityPub posts as a public stream and native Nomad posts as a fine-grain-permissioned stream.
#TIL about the F3 format, which is a standard container for the full contents of a software project (source code, issues discussions etc). It's one part of allowing people to easily move projects between code forges, or interact with them from a different forge (ie #ForgeFederation):

Just gonna say this right here,
Mastodon.social is quickly becoming intolerable for many reasons.
If you follow me, or even see this post, I highly advise changing instances. For your own sake, and for the sake of your federation with others.
A lot of smaller instances and a lot of users have already started blocking mastodon.social because of its ineffective moderation at such great volume.
The reason Fedi scales so well is being split up into smaller, manageable instances. Look into account migration, and find another instance, it’s the only course of action I can advise at this point
