@chemoelectric prolog variable names can be all lower case if prefixed with an underscore.

The reason that we think GPT is intelligent is because we’ve been conditioned to associate bullshit generation with smarts.

@jameschip I think we should question the notions of innovation and progress.
There is a lot of innovation in consumer devices, but the main purpose is to increase the profit margin, not to give the consumer a better product, and certainly not to make the world a better place.

As a fan, this use-case screams "Hubzilla"! Its a CMS+social messaging toolbox which allows articles, private groups, comment moderation, federation, synchronized replicas. There likely aren't that many concerns with it as a CMS; its social messaging experience cops criticism deservedly - but, hey, it has an ActivityPub plug-in that can suit commenters.

One things I really like about politicalcompass.org, for all its flaws, is why it annoys people like Tom Utley:

telegraph.co.uk/comment/426276

For most highly ideological people, the left-right political spectrum runs from one corner of the graph to the other. With either left or right at the authoritarian end, depending on their bias. What the #PoliticalCompass annoys people by pointing out, is that there are authoritarians on both sides of the of economic spectrum.

I found a bot which was hammering my site. So I asked the author if they could make it opt-in.

Apparently consent doesn't matter if it's for the greater good.

“…then it’s their problem” seems to be almost universally the new approach to AI safety.

@alex free/open software maintainers repackage of their own volition, I guess. Proprietary software devs do what management tells them to.

I wonder if "early leavers" is a category of users we should pay as much attention to as "early adopters." What is a tool or service you left early? #UX #UXdesign

My wife bought a new Mac a few months ago. She could no longer use the printer, a trusty old Brother HL-5030. It turns out that you need to install some suuuuper old drivers, which you can only install if you install Rosetta, first. But it worked! Wow. I don't understand how normal people do this. I guess they buy new printers because software engineers can't be bothered to repackage the drivers. Shame on them!

@strypey people still might need a log-in on each platform. Hubzilla has had a known solution for one log-in across multiple platforms but nobody in ActivityPub protocol design has cared, apparently.

@kairyssdal and @kimberlyadams talked about how the sunk cost of letting Titter own your web of connections ("social graph") makes moving out painful. This is exactly what the lock-in business model of Walled Gardens (centralised apps) relies on. Anyone who leaves Titter for another centralised social app is setting themselves up for exactly the same transition pain, whenever that app's owners finds they have to monetize their users to pay back their investors. Don't do it to yourselves!

So even if everything in the original quote was technically correct, the problems they identify are more to do with frustrated habits, rather than anything people find inherently difficult. As it happens Mastodon *does* have a two-way verification system for individual accounts on shared servers. But the best way for NPR to establish official Mastodon accounts - and for people to identify them - is to hang them off the npr.org domain, and promote them on npr.org.

@carlschwan

This might get me to move my site over to something static since comments were one of the things keeping me on Wordpress. Thanks!

@janboddez No request is done unless people ask to load the replies. And you should trust your mastodon instance to not collect data about your site visitors but at the same time it is still so much better than the usual embedded comments system full of ads and trackers.

@carlschwan I have been considering this, but haven’t had the cycles to try it. Definitely bookmarking. Side note: A few people have been wondering why anyone would run their own Mastodon instance. Here’s a use case.

I've been using Emacs for years (decades?) and I've only just discovered that one can embed an ASCII art drawing in an Org file by:
- creating a source code block ("<s TAB")
- add "artist" as the programming language
- open the block ("C-c '")
You're in artist mode, drawing with the mouse as in a paint program, only ASCII rather than colors come out. Then close the block ("C-c '" again) and you have ASCII art embedded in your document.

Emacs, always more surprises.

Incidentally, the required packages are all distributed with base Emacs. No installation needed.
