If I were to learn a non-#uxn stack language should I learn #Factor, #Forth (if that, which Forth implementation?), or something else? Ideally I'd like something compiled or transpiled so I can distribute programs without expecting people to have the interpreter installed.

@CapitalEx @nytpu upper-bound and lower-bound are the terminology as I recall from a project (and yes, it would have helped if that code had said that instead of using max and min).

The 10 in Windows 10 actually means how many minutes you have to wait for it to run reasonably okay on an HDD

Game companies support passkeys. Most financial institutions do not.
Game companies almost universally seem to support MFA for their websites. Financial institutions do not typically support more than sms verification.

As an outsider to I wonder if the "write the application in Forth" mentality is not just due to its embedded-class hardware targets. Maybe it is also because it is difficult to expose an API or an ABI from Forth that other types of languages can use.

@scops @SM0RVV @haiku out of curiosity, how much of a difference does the single-user nature of the OS make to running random scripts in the browser?

Lobbying of government by tech corporations is bound to be a factor in their decisions to move all government data and services into The Cloud (TM), ie computers owned and run by those corporations. Which gives them - and the governments of the countries they're headquartered in - a huge amount of leverage over pur country. Once they hold all our data, contract negotiations become a kind of respectable RansomWare attack, due to the costs and hassle of getting out of their lock-in traps.

People: “Tech industry, stop with the NFT grifts!”
Tech industry: “Fine, how about these lying text generators instead?”
People: “No, not like that.”

@kurator88 I feel like you're coming from a place of "I will always drive so nobody else is allowed not to" perspective that isn't useful or helpful to anyone, including yourself. Making it possible for others to default to something other than driving makes your drive better, too.

fsf rms opinion

@ocdtrekkie
If it is not asking too much, would you define what harm FSF is doing, and what gatekeeping it is doing?

OSI, meant to milk volunteers for corporate use, has done its job well, if not the job volunteers might have liked it to do.
@faho

Welp, I'm giving another talk on satellite pollution so I have to update the numbers in my slides.

*checks planet4589.org/space/con/star/ and celestrak.org/NORAD/elements/t*

Oh crap, there are 150 more Starlinks than when I gave a talk on this topic 1 month ago.

3908 Starlink satellites out of 7545 total satellites.

52% of all sats now owned by one awful dude. Still with effectively no regulations. This is so bad.

Basic compatibility? Hubzilla/Streams do that, I think. Epicyon too, likely. Both can be run on RPi-class hardware or shared VPS, I believe, Epicyon without even a database.

> Lemmy seems to have managed it, and it's entirely group-based.
hmmm, Streams had some complaints.

@filippo This goes well with the recent quote I saw about another instance imploding: "federation is feudalism"

It's just the wrong set of tools at the wrong level.

Others and I have been saying for a long time that federation is the poorest compromise, and we really need fully decentralized solutions (not saying it's easy, I well know that) but federation is often the worst of both worlds as cimprimise

@filippo Yeah but they just ignored us, they didn’t make us feel like abusers for asking.
