In the 1960s, when scientists began studying neutrinos streaming out of the sun, they measured only about a third of the output predicted by theory. Oscillation explained why: the missing two thirds were morphing from electron neutrinos into muon and tau neutrinos as they traveled to Earth, but the instruments were set up to see only electron neutrinos. Although the discovery put to bed the so-called solar neutrino problem, it exposed another mystery: according to theory, the only way for neutrinos to switch flavors is for them to have mass—and that is something that the Standard Model did not predict.

______
But the Higgs mechanism works only on particles that come in both right-handed and left-handed versions, a fundamental difference related to the orientation of their spin relative to their direction of motion. So far neutrinos have been seen only in left-handed form. If they got mass from the Higgs field, then right-handed neutrinos must also exist. But right-handed neutrinos have never been observed, which suggests that if they are real they do not interact at all with any other forces or particles in nature

DeSantis will bar all public school teachers from providing classroom instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity next month

They’re expanding the “don’t say gay” law—a move conservatives and moderates said wouldn’t happen

File this under “this will only apply to grades 3 and under” and “Social security is safe with us” and “Any politician breaking classified records laws should go to jail”

Anything a republican says? The truth is the opposite.

This seems to be getting more and more common now, people have developed short attention spans, to learn anything complex takes, time, effort and patience. You can't just expect instant results or instant gratification from say science or computing for example.

This may be due to the prevalence of short videos on sites such as Instagram, TikTok which offer a short burst of a topic or activity.

Anyone got some info on what has happens in Scotland, apparently a ship moved in dry dock and a number of people have been injured. The BBC news are covering the Boris Johnson thing which is hardly news anyway.

Let's be clear: America's “moral crisis” isn't about pregnancies, contraceptives, or which bathroom people use.

It's obscene CEO pay, wage theft from workers, Wall Street gambling, money corrupting our politics, and the failure of those with power to serve the common good.

At 11am, I’m leading a debate in Parliament urging the Government to make solar panels mandatory on all suitable new homes.

It’s time for a real rooftop revolution ☀️

Does the US have some sort of standards body that ensures memebrs of the legal profession do their job properly, and to a specifc standard, to ensure those seeking legal help get this, so that justice is available to all.

I am sure the UK does, and in the UK we have people like the general medical council who hold doctors / medical professionals to account.

I think pixel fed is designed / optimised for sharing pictures, so designed by creators for other creators to share their work. So other creators can comment on that.

Federation just allows people who are not on pixelfed to follow you and view / share / comment on what is created.

So I guess it gives people options on how they interact and who with.

@arstechnica

I agree here, perhaps as the fedi we can lead the way. All news stories should be verifiable, evidence cited and backed up. If users here have the confidence to fact check and question stories, we will hopefully become a social network where critical thinking is the normal process.

A few years ago, the BBC reported on a police on the home of Cliff Richard, in relation to a paedophile story, he was totally innocent, and yet, his reputation was put at risk, IIRC he sued the BBC.

If Trump is arrested then this would surely be announced through legitimate sources such as the police (I appreciate the lack of trust in the police), appropriate information released as not to harm any court case.

@Teri_Kanefield

I am sure in the UK if you try and interfere with evidence then it would be perverting the course of justice, intimidating a witness, jury or the DA (well the UK equivelent) woulld be contemt of court,

Such acts would carry their own punishment.

It's happening... More followers here on Mastodon than on Twitter. And y'all are much nicer here too.

Hmm I am going to have to break off from listening to the Police : Greatest hits to watch this now :)

The Wombles had the circular economy all figured out back in 1968. We should all aspire to be like the Wombles.
