To add there are a few users on here that seem to use a certain N word a lot, I just block them.

@mattskala @manarock @TheAncestor

I am sure there are 1000's of words in the English language alone that have multiple meaning. Some meanings can be offensive, sometimes depends on context, era etc.

@joedoudna

I would refer to the schools anti bullying policy and report. At the same time keep a record of the abuse, who is doing this and any friends who you trust (and are not doing this) to act as witnesses.

The school should be able to deal with this.

@mattskala @manarock @TheAncestor

Out of interest, are the people who deemed this to be racist, black and find it offensive. Or are we looking at a bunch of woke people deciding it is racist in which case they clearly thing that people who are black are somehow incapable of saying something like "sorry please don't use that term. "

It seems to me a lot of this is one group of people deciding for everyone else it is a term that is racist / ;offensive.

Doing so is in fact perhaps offensive as I am perfectly capable of telling YOU that the term you have used is something i would prefer not to hear myself.

@ruina if things worked there would be no need for upgrades, no need for tech support and companies providing that would lose money.

@Erik

Fully agree here. However people know and trust (thanks to brainwashing) facebook, therefore they will go with what they know.

But that should not stop us building something better.

Lets go for it

ps can I encourage more people to use these hashtags, we may not have trending here but it shows support for that cause.

For everyone in the EU who wants to work on the future of social media, the metaverse, interoperability and openness.

Please don't start working for Facebook. You won't be part of the solution, you won't improve the world. At most, you will hinder the actual technical innovations we both dream of.

Organise yourselves, look for leaders to start a co-operative or nonprofit and work with everything you have to bring the true vision of ethical technology to the masses.

@echo_pbreyer Child abuse images on line are a indication of peoples failure to protect taht child from abuse.

I did child safeguarding training costing £20 with elearningatwork,

Most of the other courses such ash Health and Safety cost £14 on average, so the course cost more.

If we want to raise more awareness why don't we make these courses the same cost as others.

We need to raise awareness, improve reporting and ensure robust action is taken at all levels to protect children (and vulnerable adults too of course)

@radiofm4@twitter.com 🇬🇧 Leading IT security experts such as Bruce Schneier warn about EU attack on #encryption: Plans for #chatcontrol2 are "far more insidious than earlier proposals for key escrow and exceptional access".

@AbbieNormal

The @fsfe have some excellent resources.

The @fsf are woring on a 'freedom ladder' to help people get started so not jumping from non free to free over night but help people transition.

Which is great if your hardware has non free components, when you replace that hardware you are able to use free software, and are better informed as to what new hardware to get that works fully with free software.

@Hyolobrika @icedquinn @newsbot

What about others who are being abused online.

I agree, but they are going to act now. Weather we like it or not.

So if social media doesn't up their game, the MPs will force them to through new laws.

They want social media companies to act on anonymity for one. Which is bad news for activists in countries where they face prison, torture or death for speaking out or trying to.

@icedquinn @newsbot

Sure we can criticise MPs but what about the assault threats, death threats and in some cases rape threats or threats of sexual violence.

Or acts of violence 2 MPs murdered in the last 5 years.

@icedquinn @newsbot

Good point.Either way, changes are now coming and Facebook and others (even here) are going to feel those changes.

The Uk online harms bill or online safety bill (now confused as the media mention both) is coming as is other legislation.

.MPs and others have suffered abuse for far too long as people hid behind anonymity.

Like i said before we need to balance stoppting this but also protect those who need anonymity to do their job (activists for example) I fear that the latter may be sacrificed for the former.

The conversation on how to influence policy is ongoing on

socialhub.activitypub.rocks/.

@icedquinn @newsbot Good point, but should there be more human oversight for the AI so it can be improved ?

@hbenjamin You could set up a @writeas blog that way non fedi users can read too. Perhaps provide a link to the instance you are on, we could get more sign ups.
