I agree, I tried to contact a tutoring place the other week, was advised by the person running the company, she would be back on the Thursday of that week , so call when she is back, I called on the Thursday and the phone just rang, hung up and gave up. Emailed back to say this, no reply

So I agree with you, it seems as you said you e-mail someone then get told to use a different method.

I much prefer e-mail as I can explain what I am looking in detail (hopelly once) and if the recipient can reply and answer questions, then that e-mail exists for later reference.

I guess it is also like here on fedi, we are a community so a community can post, get replies and reply to those replies. Rather than the one way, unmonitored traffic you get with mainstream social media.

@Ulrich_the_Elder The United States & her allies defeated Nazi Germany, but the U.S. refrained from defeating the Nazi part of America - a burden, that's still harmful.

Immediately after the war the allies banned the swastika, the Nazi party & the publication of "Mein Kampf" in Germany - none of that happened in the U.S., on grounds of a potentially dangerous & self-destructive naïve interpretation of the First Amendment.

"While America protects the right of neo-Nazis, white supremacists, the Ku Klux Klan, and other hate groups to hold public rallies and express their views openly, Germany has strict laws banning Nazi symbols and what’s called Volksverhetzung — incitement of the people, or hate speech. Like more than a dozen European countries, Germany also has a law criminalizing Holocaust denial."

Free speech has & needs limits — to prevent harm & protect the Rule of the People aka democracy.

If they are selling something once they have your money . They give the impression they don't care.

Small businesses seem to go out of their way to solve problems.

You ever get the feeling most companies and organizations in existence seem to think that if someone can't call them, for example, someone who can't hear on telephones to use them, they just don't matter?

Send email; "Call us!"

Send text; "Call us!"

How about you answer using the same means a customer contacts you?

Is that really difficult to grasp?

More than 20,000 innocent Ukrainian children lost their most precious childhood memories - like playing with friends.

Now they are exposed to the cruelty of war.

We must act now to claim their freedom and bring them back home to an independent Ukraine.

Aurora is a staple tool for people looking to de-google their Android devices. Currently, Google has broken the ability for anonymous logins, and they’re now deleting some Google accounts used through Aurora. I would guess the experience on Mastdon would be replicated on other fediverse services, we embrace the ideas of collaboration and community.

@trinsec I do have passion on programing, but not the one those enterprises need. I write posts for my blog monthly, mainly about some random stuff I did in the last month, like writing a simple read-only FUSE in Kotlin, dig into how email system prevents spam, record how I implemented a P2P chat system in Minecraft, etc. I do enjoy them, I did that for about 5 or 6 years, and I still want to keep doing that.

I generally hope I can turn my passion for programming into a job, which I don't suffer from. But based on situation, where I know the enterprise doesn't need a SpringBoot and MySQL master to build a product, and the enterprise knows that too, but they still want to hire a person who mastered those things and pay him/her an entry level salary, I don't think the job is the one I want. A Java programmer who masters the SpringBoot, database, cloud, knows how SpringBoot and MySQL work internally, knows how to design cloud-native applications, works 12 hours a day, and gets paid less than 2K USD per month? I would call it greedy.

While other people have workarounds, I don't like it. They simply repeat those Q&As and pretend to know everything about those things but in fact they rarely understood them. I think programing is about doing something and learning from it, not memory something and don't know how to use it.

@doomscroller

I looked up Tritium and found the following

1. It has a 1/2 life about about 12 years [1]
2. The dacay has a range of about 6km, so I think this means that the beta particles won't travel very far.*
3. Tritium occours naturally looking at [1] doesn't seem to afect human health or I guess the article would say so.

* I am not too sure where I read this as I looked up on several sites.

To add however I don't realaly like the idea of dumping anythig into the environment, it just seems to disrupt things too much.

Interesting on a totally different note, the area of the pacific earmarked for mining is teaming with new species we know nothing about, so this mekes me wonder if we dump this tritium close to shore, will it disperse and end up in the deeper ocean too.

Rather than mining, we need to consume less and recycle more.

Expert says dumping #Fukushima water a retrograde action
Tilman Ruff says the danger is that dumping the contaminated water could settle on the sea floor or concentrate up the food chain.

Happy Sunday!

A reminder:

The Catholic Church spent $11 mill in the NE US to fight legislation that would help victims of clergy sexual abuse get justice
In NY the Catholic Church spent $3 mill lobbying against the Child Victims Act
The Catholic Church donated over $3 mill to limit abortion access in Kansas
The Catholic Church refused to pay $20 mill to residential school survivors
- then they paid $30 mill for a new cathedral in Saskatoon

@verdantsquare

I party coffers are a bit low, due to the fact some of the people who have donated, seem to be involved with doing so in a dodgy way, the MPs involved have been caught and that funding source cut off.

Why do we accept these obscene levels of #Inequality in the #UK? #Foodbank demand soaring and soaring; families who only have £4 per week for #Food; better paid #NHS staff routinely bringing in food so that their colleagues can make it through the day. Meanwhile more #Billionaires and wealth at the top than ever. Yet all “normal” by now. We have #ShiftingBaselineSyndrome not just with #ClimateChange but also inequality

What is meant by publishing? If I wrote a paperI can upload to arXiv for free I think, I am not in academia so don't fully understand the processes.

I can write any document and make this available on my website for free anyway.

Maybe some publishing models belong in the 20th Century (and before) we have the internet and a new way of doing things and sharing information, but yes those doing the research / writing the results HAVE to be properly compensated.

@petersuber @mjskay if you have Open Access and also no APCs, who is paying the costs associated with publishing?
