@aral

Saturday I am doing my usual CodeClub at my local library, then sunday is American Football training, which this week is more of a social / fun session at the local beach / seafront.

So can @greenpeace make this point too, so peole understand oil is not just about CO_2 but stopping oil will also reduce plastic production and pollution too.

@zleap @pattykimura @futurebird The principal didn’t agree, the day we blew a hole in the middle of the soccer field.

It is perplexing (or some other word) that so many people in the US, despite the mounting evidence of wrongdoing, seem to refuse to accept the fact that Trump has broken the law, and seem to be willing to do ANYTHING at any cost to themselves and others to stand behind Trump.

@zleap @mzedp also might be worth looking into PHB and other biophysics 🙂

@marytzu @mzedp

Thanks, i will try and look in to this for my blog article

@zleap @mzedp here's another idea for you though: polymers are made from monomers, monomers such as ethene, styrene, vinyl chloride et al don't *have* to come from oil. You can synthesise them from carbon dioxide & water & a few others using green energy. It's just not thermodynamically favourable or cheap.

Many internet critics have tried to blame social media for ethnic violence. The sad reality is that ethnic violence is as old as the Bible and not recently spurred by technology.

It turns out quite often that social media is actually a way for victims to spread word about crimes against them and document. Without it, these atrocities simply happen in the darkness without global eyes on them. 😞

This is why I want a wider discussion, But good point in making things from wood, may be more expensive but it does in many cases look nicer.

Door handles can be made from metals, (e.g brass) which are more recycalable anyway.

@zleap @mzedp a few things I want to say about this topic:
- plastics replaced wood products when they were popularised
For many products we could return to wood, it's just more expensive
- which brings me to my second point: plastics are only so cheap because ethene etc are by-products of oil refining where the main $$$ product is fuel (octane and hydrocarbons with similar properties to octane),
Ban burning fossil fuel hydrocarbons & it fossil fuel plastic becomes economically unfeasible to

I agree here, we just need to reduce emissions of greeenhouse gasses. However does removing CO_2 solve the problem, which I made a point about before that there are also other gasses that adding to warming, plus emissions of particulates that are linked to respiratory problems and cancers.

Increased atmospheric CO₂ is expected to expand the Hadley cell, leading to more droughts in the subtropics and rainfall in the tropics.

A study finds that CO₂ removal (CDR) will not return the Hadley cell to its original state for centuries.

It’s best not to emit CO₂.

Kind of like with radioactive waste, lets put it in storage and leave it, oh then let future generations monitor and deal with it.

I think we should encourage kids to do experiments, I was a bit older when I got a chemistry set, lots of fun, still have various notes about what happens when chem x is mixed with chem y.

I want to do this more, the stem group I run is meant to have a practical science element to it, but I am stuck doing computing a lot of the time.

Hopefully that will change as I have lots of nice sciency stuff I want to do and help visitors to do too.

@futurebird As a curious 8 year old I conducted my own clandestine experiment I named "Does It Burn?". I watched my mom use an aluminum pie tin in the oven, so I used that as my holder. I created a list of things to test: Dirt, rocks, kleenex, newspaper, glass, brown paper bag, stainless steel, aluminum, cast iron. Each with a hypothesis. I used my Dad's matches and tested, and safely guessed each outcome until aluminum. There I learned an aluminum sheet does not burn if held horizontally, but if turned vertically, bursts into big flames like paper scaring the heck out of an unprepared 8 year old. Frightened, I dropped it into the pie tin. Which I realized was also ALUMINUM!!! Even more frightened I dropped the flaming sheet and pie tin into the trash can lined with a brown paper bag. Oh NO! Brown paper bags burn! I was so frightened I blew it all out with one adrenaline infused breath, then dumped the whole thing into the stainless steel kitchen sink and turned on the water. I stopped my experiments on that day. Science is very exciting. I became a poet.

Perhaps this is the price paid for centralisation and having to trust someone else to do the work of hosting stuff.

If you run your own services on an indeoendent server service, there is a huge amount of work involved, at one time there were many people with those skills, you could easily find expertise at the local computer group meetings.

I get the impression now there are less experts around and those who are, are more reluctant ( and I understand that ) to get involved.

Just as fedi, gives people mroe control, there is more work involved in running the service, we need to find a way to bring more people together so we can run more of these services away from central controls,

Easier said than done, but we are just at the mercy of big tech all the time, which is not good.

@HamonWry

Interesting question, perhaps we should ask the church if she was raped by god (non consensual sex).

@Loukas

While I agree, but if they are here even in the form of a bot that can post content that is posted elsewhere on their channels it would help them reach out, plus that content would in effect ne subscribe only as only those following would see it.

If it was an offical bot account then it would take content and publish here, we can still interact with it, or at least favorite / boost, but that is a starting point.

There is always talk of social media being the main battle ground, well things need to start somewhere.

@Loukas @anderspuck

I agree, I can see the Tories losing the next election but even with a majority for labour, we NEED a strong opposition to hold themk to account, ask the right questions and ensure election promises are kept.

Perhaps one way for them to win, would be for labour to have a presense on fedi, we are building numbers and need to be able to interact and learn what policies they have from social media as in here. They are NOT going to reach potential voters here by being on mainstream social media.
