"Thousands of scientists are cutting back on Twitter, seeding angst and uncertainty."

The #1 choice is Mastodon!

Let's reach out to all our scientist (and non-scientist) friends and acquaintances and encourage them to join the Fediverse. If you still have an account on twitter, post some messages there with links to the Mastodon signup site. Let's welcome them here and provide some gentle hints on how to be productive here.

A Minister was just asked if the Canadian Government can force Meta to deliver news on its platforms in this Emergency and I can't believe we have allowed ourselves to become so beholden to one company. I am *glad* Meta is blocking now because people will go elsewhere! Minister Blair suggested people tune into CBC Radio. Which is the right answer!!! Long Live the FEDIVERSE and public broadcasting!

@hyperplanes

+1 however maybe Musk should be asking the question, do people use this feature before removing it as a feature.

@Independent

Well I am gonna miss watching the final too, have American Football training session and I have an idea to discuss with head coach. Things can take priority, If William had flowed over to Australia just for a soccer game, he would have been criticized for doing so during a climate emergency.

@AnneJosefine

So in a sort of effort to figure out what we get from crude oil, I have now expanded my list and linked nearly all of these items to a Wikipedia page.

personaljournal.ca/paulsutton/

Hopefully from this, we see that we get quite a lot from crude oil, the questions now are :

1. What can we do without? If not, lets stop making / using it, or vastly reduce this need.
2. Can we make any of the products we need, without having to fall back on to Cruide Oil
3, Is the above sustainable, both financially and environmentally
4. If 3 is No, should we go back to 1.
5. Other considerations

If we are going to end our reliance on Crude oil the changes we are going to have to make, clearly go beyond fuel for cars, there is a whole range of products we get.

Hence the need for R&D and investment in STEM to solve these questions.

@deltatux

Well that jump is seriously stark and this is JUST Canada.

@georgetakei

I agree with you here, we need to invest in alternatives, education and R&D

Those who still cling on to fossil fuels should be seen as unemployable in the new way forward.

There’s a HURRICANE this weekend heading for Baja and Southern California. Folks, that is not in any way normal.

I may not live long enough to see the worst of the impacts of climate change, but I want to use my voice and platform today to urge action.

We can start by ending subsidies and investments into fossil fuels. Full stop.

Did you know that Anne Louise Avery @annelouiseavery now has an Etsy shop? She has named it Souris des Moissons (the French for harvest mouse, which is completely charming) and for anyone who loves her tales of Old Fox, her retelling of Reynard, or the colouring maps of the Poly-Olbion, there are wonderful gleanings to be found. #OldFox #ReynardTheFox #PolyOlbion

What makes you enthusiastic about the web?

A connection? A project? A technology?

On threads now as brendanmay11

If Musk does actually disable the block function I will be leaving Twitter completely, so hope to see you on the other side!
