There is no inflation when corporations are seeing record profits. That's not inflation. That's greed.

I try to keep my 🐘 feed focused to my own work/interests and to #AcademicChatter ... but this year's wildfire season in Canada has been apocalyptic. It's not just the residents fleeing the fires (already horrible), even the cities far away are unable to exercise or breathe outdoors. My 94yo bubby has been stuck inside much of the summer, my asthmatic mum has been suffering. There is no one unaffected.

We needed to respond 30 years ago.

A superb cover for this issue of the Nature Astronomy Journal, featuring a Tidal Disruption Event (TDE) triggered by a star passing close to a supermassive black hole.

Your vote is not a marriage. You’re not choosing a life partner. It’s a chess move for what’s best for the country and the world.

Re: leaving Twitter/X (and this toot is for my #NonprofitComms folks out there):

I led my team through an exercise the other week. I asked them to rapidly list all the reasons we've heard from internal stakeholders why we shouldn't leave Twitter.

They generated a list of about 10 reasons.

Then I asked, one by one, if these statements were TRUE.

And it turns out, only 2 were true AND relevant:
Yes, we have our largest following on Twitter
Yes, connecting to Twitter is still a primary way online advocacy happens.

But even these had serious caveats: Is our following growing? No (the opposite has been happening since the Musk acquisition). Are our advocates using Twitter for advocacy? No. Are electeds engaging with us on Twitter? No.

One by one, the excuses made to stay on Twitter/X were knocked down. There is seriously no REAL reason to stay there.

No evidence-based reason, that is.

Here’s the story of how a 37-follower Twitter account seeded a propaganda narrative about Hawaii that made headlines around the world, thanks to a network of right-wing influencers — and amplification by both Russian and Chinese state media.
