cold showers are good for you

#today is Black Bin Monday in my area. As the Green recycling bin is full to overflowing, all the recycling from my block will be going into the Black Bin until next week when it's Green Bin Monday. Last time I complained about this fiasco I was told to take the overflow to the tip. I explained that the bus drivers will not allow me to travel with four smelly black bags of refuse and neither will the taxi drivers. Anyway, we pay for them to empty the bins!

“People are saying, ‘Is Hubble going to be useless now?’” says Tom Brown at @spacetelescope. “It’s not, because it has unique capabilities... Hubble’s pretty much the only game for a huge chunk of astrophysics."

Students Taking Back ‘Ownership’ Of Education

“We defended these books, which remained in the library ... We saw book banning slow down, and that was really phenomenal to see.”

“It shocked me that a district i had grown up in was not only characterizing my identity as a lifestyle, as a choice, but it was calling it alternative and inherently sexual.”

Anyone got a good, civilian-level article about Activitypub? I am not a coder but I am good at looking for weird uses for things. Looking to understand the full extent of what it’s capable of and easy ways to run things.

Germany to join Mediterranean hydrogen pipeline project

The hydrogen pipeline will bring "green" gas from the Iberian Peninsula to the rest of Europe. France, Portugal, and Spain previously agreed to build the pipeline, which should be operational by 2030.

This was one of my first shots of the roseate spoonbill that showed up a few years ago.

I love how they sweep their bills back and forth when they are looking for food.

My failure to get anyone interested in numworks makes me depressed. It all came down to one guy who teaches stats & just didn’t like the idea of changing anything. I did a whole huge presentation on the advantages of this less expensive, more flexible, calculator but this is why companies like TI are so intractable. No one wants to think about technology. It’s the fediverse v. twitter problem all over again in some ways. It’s hard to get people to reconsider a choice they don’t see as important.

Eastern Grey Squirrel

I took this in Georgia over Thanksgiving. It's a squirrel scrambling up a tree. I processed it weeks ago but deemed it not worthy. Since them it has been hanging around my "to do file." So, I decided to post and be done with it 😏😉.

I used to be a cheerleader for switching to the numworks graphing #calculators but I couldn’t get my huge math department on board with that decision. 😒🙄

The TI 84 CE now has a python app— and I guess that’s good enough. Only there are some things I question about the implementation. For example in python to use the math library (sine, cosine, square root etc.) you need to start the program with “from math import *” this feels … silly. It’s a calculator. Why not have #mathematics by default?

If someone tells you there's nothing we can do about gun violence beyond thoughts and prayers, remind them:

— Gun laws in other countries have stopped mass shootings

— More guns don't make us safer

— The vast majority of Americans want gun control

Inaction is a policy choice.

@pluralistic Interestingly we can see this happening right now with Spotify as well - it's starting to push musicians to pay to get streams. And of course they'll take those 'great recommendations' and start filling it with paid for shit and AI generated music they don't have to pay royalties on.

@zleap After some letters from Eugen they uploaded a zip file with some version but no idea how recent
