Folks in other countries who say they don’t care about US politics have clearly not considered what happens next if the proud owner of the world’s deadliest military goes full-fat fascist.
(They might want to ask their friends in countries that have tasted the semi-skimmed version.)
This is what happens when Christian, Jewish, & Muslim Ghostbusters cross the streams . . .

Did you know Tesla has cameras both on the outside of vehicles and the inside, and everything is uploaded to Tesla? Anyhoo they’ve been exporting the videos, making memes of customers and then posting them on chat rooms. https://www.reuters.com/technology/tesla-workers-shared-sensitive-images-recorded-by-customer-cars-2023-04-06/

The Critical infrastructure Lab is launching next week in Amsterdam, with the mission of researching power and contestation in global digital infrastructures.
The lab is doing a two day launch event, during which our @openfuture team will organize a session with a title that I hope is a bit surprising: “imagining the future: what should the next european commission do?”.
Yes, while many people imagine whether #AI will become sentient or not, we are interested in the digital policy programmes of the next European Commission(s).
Why? Because policymaking is world building. Because European regulation is shaping the world in powerful ways. And we want to imagine together, where it should be going.

Last lecture of the term means I am sharing Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot speech, the best speech ever written about why astronomy is important - because it shows how fragile and unique and tiny our home is. Give it a listen if you haven't in a while!
Yeah it's cool that Alan Turing was gay and also brilliant.
However urging people not to persecute trans and gay people because some of us might be as brilliant and useful as Turing is not it. Everyone deserves to live a happy life even if they're not super smart and produce useful inventions. Such exhortations, while well-meaning, fail to challenge the underlying problem which is that we live in a fucking meat grinder.
A BS study touted widely by anti-vaxxers is about to be retracted. This should make your blood boil -- and lead to deep soul-searching at all scientific journals.
The damage this stuff causes to public perceptions of science, and to public health, is incalculable.

The importance of open social networks is particularly relevant in today's world, where information is power and those in power often seek to control the flow of information. Without open social networks, the truth could be obscured, and people could be manipulated and misled. #InformationIsPower #OpenNetworks #Truth
I have an immediate opening for a sysadmin in an OT (industrial) environment. Primary responsibilities are further rollout of our monitoring system, administration of networks and servers, and security ops. Experience with Linux, Python, Ansible, bash scripting desired; tolerance of windows. Open source mindset is a must.
Contract is local so must be willing to relocate to Germany (Düsseldorf area). We provide relocation assistance, also for non-EU citizens. DM for details. #getfedihired
Believe it or not, in the years 1950-1951, the A. C. Gilbert Company distributed the Gilbert U-238 Atomic Energy Lab, a toy kit allowing kids to make nuclear reactions at home using actual radioactive material. It was taken off the shelves in 1951

@tchambers the crumbling of the "like economy" might be the best thing to happen to "social media" since its inception!
Alan Turing is widely recognized as a hero and a genius. He’s considered the father of theoretical computer science and AI.
But he was also a gay man whom the British government chemically castrated.
Turing killed himself because of the way his government treated him.
What more might he have done had he lived?
As this wave of hatred sweeps the US, I wonder how many gay and trans Alan Turings we’ve already lost, and how many we’ll continue to lose.
