@be @feoh funny. I had no idea purism was trying for "convergence". They're all *secure your digital life* which, outside of techies, hackers, journalists, and certain marginalized or oppressed people, most aren't going to reach for. If they really made it so people could seamlessly move their work between devices, and got all of the kinks out of that, they'd have general consumer appeal. (The better to fund their social purpose or whatever.)

@trinsec weird. anyway, it's just a link to details on Krispy Kreme's promotion for a free donut any day to someone with a covid-19 vaccination. There's a FAQ that asks "what if i choose not to get vaccinated?" instead of the obvious response of "no donut for you" it's "free donut and coffee on Mondays" for some reason

It's kinda nuts that they're also doing a promotion for ppl who aren't choosing to get vaccinated. Like, why? krispykreme.com/promos/vaccine

I'm just hearing about . Is it as big as grubhub or uber eats in the US in the countries where they operate?

@niconiconi my screens aren't especially big (1280x1024 and 1920x1080), but I use XMonad. Side-by-side views are what I use most, but I also like the default layout with a big window @ left and the rest vertically, visually stacked @ right. I don't often *use* the stacked windows like that (sometimes, for a terminal window) but often the small section of the window is at least as informative as the window label... I guess the keyboard-centric navigation is the biggest boon though vs floating windows where you almost have to use the mouse for layout.

The whole remaining problem here is deciding whether a contract has been violated. This doesn't necessarily require a state, but at this point at least some third party that is already trusted. (Except contracts the terms of which can be evaluated automatically, but this is a category so constrained that it borders on uselessness.)

Blockchains only provide enough synthetic trust to work as currencies, and barely any more. Other applications still require research.

@timorl Yep. I think you could build in some other actors to the contract. Like, some compliance verification free-lancer who can give access to options for redress. You could have a refund (with interest or damages even), but there's more to consider about certifying the compliance officer, options of "specific performance" (back to the enforcement). Still, if the alleged infringer wanted to contest, you still need some kind of judge...I just keep ending up at <you need a government> or <you need to completely restructure society>. I get the feeling crypto-anarchists would be like, "yeah, the second one" 🙄

I was thinking about and . Like, I guess you could use them to transfer titles/deeds with less overhead, which, yeah, probably: less ink and stamping once you have some template contracts. However, I've read suggestions that these things enable cross-borders trust... that's B.S. though. Two parties could agree on terms in a smart contract and with whatever terms, but one or the other party could still renege and it would still devolve onto some state to enforce the provisions, which is the state of affairs now.

@niconiconi hahahahahha. budget 🤣 what budget is that?

anyways, the project is still going. it's just that we're almost all part-time volunteers who mostly do other stuff. occasionally we publish.

@Science

This is so cool. With just a little bit of modification using a single 3d printed part glued to the side of the head of a 3d printer this japanese team managed to create a fully autonomous robot that can basically built its own tools, pick them up, and then use them to manipulate its environment.

@lupyuen neat. isn't it part of the joy of sourdough baking supposed to be the attention and sensation of interacting with the living yeast? I guess this is more after your starter is established, so it just helps with maintenance...I've haven't baked sourdough yet, but that aspect of it is something that's delayed me, so this could be useful

I know they want me to put "engineer" for my job title but as a software engineer, I don't always *feel* like a real engineer. Like, I mostly make web apps--important web apps--but not control software for a rocket or something.

@Science

Hey everyone, a supernova just went off in Cassiopeia!!!! Right now it is in the early stage so only visible by telescope but after a few days it is likely to be visible to the naked eye. Supernovas are fairly rare so might want to make some time to see this one!

@freemo @Science but astronomers and soon the whole of earth looked on in horror as the 'rare event' was repeated once, three, ten times in the span of a month. it was then they realized, this wasn't a natural occurrence: someone was snuffing out the stars one by one...

...and they were getting closer.

yeah that's cool though.

I am not against the whole "buy me a cup of coffee" ask by content creators but I do think it is really sad.

We have we devalued ourselves for corporate profits so much that it is unreasonable to ask for anything in exchange for hours of virtually unpaid labor other than a cup of coffee to drink while we do hours of virtually unpaid labor.

Like can we normalize "if you like my stuff, help me pay a little bit of my rent!" or "if you like my channel buy me some damn food so I can eat".
