I wish I shared your optimism. The desktop experience isn't a priority on the linux side; maybe bsd is better? I say go for it, I'd love to be shown wrong, and even if there's issues multi-boot should fix it quickly enough.

Interestingly enough, for similar crimes - tampering with the election.

Pros and cons. I always said pick the software you want to run, *then* choose the OS that supports it. I wonder how well OpenBSD will support things like wifi and sound...

To help preserve software, 4am dives deep, deep into Apple II floppy disks and not only figures out progressively difficult, space-program-like copy protection on the disk, but they also document it to within an inch of its life.

Come read a (40-column) overview of the epic of cracking "Spare Change", a 1983 Apple II arcade/sorting game from Br0derbund.

@rakkhi I was also doing a light outline thing about canaries over the weekend around building simple traps for attackers to walk into similar to the canary tokens but from a more home grown perspective because I too listened to that same episode and was nodding along with @thegrugq so damn hard my neck hurt.

Here is a simple example of setting up a fake /admin endpoint for a web app that would be easily picked up in an automated scan in the first pic that also sets a trap that only a person would ever pick up on by setting an “authz” cookie with the value as “unset” and redirecting them back to the home page.

I then have a second bit of code that specifically looks for that same cookie on future requests and checks if it’s set to anything other than authz as an indication that I am now dealing with a person and not a bot and hooks directly into my cloud providers security alert center dashboards if that ever happens.

A real simple deception that takes no time to set up but probably looks a lot more believable than your standard canary token.

‘If you really can't figure out which political party or which politician to vote for, just ask if they're on the side of libraries.

Are they voting to fund their libraries?
Are they voting to keep them free?

Then vote for those guys.
They're probably the good guys.

And by the same token, the book burners, the book banners, they're probably the bad guys.’

To LLMs in general, tbh.

There are some tools that have hidden issues, gotchas or legal issues, and shouldn't be used by people who aren't deeply aware of the drawbacks and limitations.

You are aware of them. I don't see you making assumptions and coming to great harm because you, say, trusted the LLM not to hallucinate entire legal filings. You are in the minority, sadly - I know otherwise sane people who think they can replace actual humans with just a LLM. And its causing harm to those real people.

Until someone comes up with a LLM that can readily tell me "I'm sorry, I don't have the data I need to give you a good, correct answer." - I fear they'll do more harm than good. And i don't see that coming any time soon.

@Jedigirl

To be fair, the statement "one in four Americans are skeptical about climate change" isn't about climate change. Its about Americans. We have this weird tolerance for people who are actively disengaged with reality, to the point of tolerating actively harmful behaviors. And we need to grow out of it soon or it's going to kill us all.

That thing where you see a cool new project on Hacker News, go to the README to find out more about it... and find there's a quote from you IN that README about how cool it is from the last time you looked at, which you had since completely forgotten! github.com/bitfield/script/blo

A good rule of thumb with lasers is "there's probably a cheaper and easier way to do this not involving lasers".

Ingenious!

Ukrainian army noticed that during hot days, the Russian mines absorb heat during the day, which is then released at night.

So with a thermal camera, the Ukrainian army can map out the exact location of the mines. 💡

They had some *very* critical car reviews - look on youtube. One hopes, for their sake, that they can iterate quickly and fix most with software updates, because more EVs is generally good - but they've made design choices i wouldn't. To be fair - so has Tesla.

@darkuncle @mwyman

Argument? I think we're on the same page. My beef with the Peter Jackson movies is *he could have done better*. It's like the 9.9 score in gymnastics - great, but you almost had perfection, and you had to throw in breakdancing wizards and dwarf bowling for the cheap laugh?

And YES A THOUSAND TIMES YES getting back to the original subject - the trick is asking the right questions. +1 insightful. Is why the LLM is doomed to be a tool and not a talent - no insight. It does not grok the fullness.

And you didn't subtweet. You subTOOTed. Kids today.
