@ThinkingSapien Nah, I used to do that, and it was a natural curiosity about their engineering that led me to my career in STEM (although I really regret cutting into Stretch Armstrong to this day).

If it advances to animals, that's when you get concerned.

Life Alert is a great example of a product that actually seems useful, but that I would never buy because the ads are so awful.

@indubitablyodin One nice feature for this that I recently discovered is, if you subscribe to your streaming services through Google Play, you can put up to a 3-month "pause" on the subscription.

It's not a full cancellation, but it prevents them from getting your money and shows you have one foot out the door.

@benni It's adorable that you think they're that polite.

When you engage with someone in good faith and read responses like "Oh, of course you'd say that, you're on XYZ.server :eyeroll: ", it's hard not to get a little defensive. ...and that was a nicer example.

@Sirablopp While I agree with your point, it's also true that Mastodon is very scoldy in general.

I regularly see threads on this platform about how awful it is that "reply guys" give "unsolicited advice". It's not just new users they scold, it's anyone who interacts with them before they give their permission.

Workers: DO NOT OVERWORK YOURSELF to avoid getting laid off.

- You’re damaging your life and health.
- Your employer doesn’t actually notice (no, really, they don’t.)
- Your behavior enables future mismanagement of resources.
- When layoffs come, you’re gonna get laid off anyway.

Remember that a company’s job is to extract maximum work from you for minimum pay, so your job is to extract maximum pay for minimum work. Somewhere in the middle, both parties find an equilibrium that they agree on. Do not voluntarily modify your side of the bargain to your detriment.

California has already run the insurance industry out of town and now they're looking to get the petroleum industry out?

The state government does realize that LA is half oil pumps, right?

@ZachWeinersmith The only real one I can think of off the top of my head is "Bangor", which I know of in Maine, but there are apparently more of them.

That said, I have a totally unsupported hypothesis that it may have roots in Indian / middle eastern names, which cemented themselves as "foreign sounding" names for the English language sometime between the crusades and the era of the East India Company.

A quick look at Google Maps does appear to show many names ending in "<vowel>r" in those regions.

So, I unexpectedly got my Playdate today! I love the interface and controls! The screen is a bit small for my tastes and I'd really prefer it had a backlight, but it's a nifty little device.

Definitely needs some better games, though.

@jeffowski Back in the day (like, early 20th century), all stores were full service. You'd give your list to the guy at the counter, he'd go through his stock and fill a bag with your goods and ring you up.

By the logic in the OP meme, just walking through the store and filling your cart is "killing jobs". But time moves forward.

Also, maybe we should consider whether these jobs are worth saving. Being a cashier sucks. You're treated like a machine anyway, at best. Let's get rid of all jobs like that and create more careers that are actually fulfilling.

@keeffyg@mastodon.social Unlikely. As I understand it, that increased risk is caused by the impact being above the pedestrian's center of mass. In a normal car, they hit below the center of mass, so the pedestrian just falls on the hood, minimizing injury. With an SUV or truck, the pedestrian is either run over or punted instead.

@helenczerski The issue with cities built around cars is that everything is spread out. You may need to go miles before getting to a main road. (This is more of an issue in the US than the UK for obvious reasons.)
So, even if you add biking infrastructure, the services and places you need to be are too far away.

I genuinely don't understand modern business.

So Warner Brothers bought HBO Max, a proprietary streaming service with a built-in customer base who love HBO's content.

They then decided to strip it of HBO content and sell that content to Netflix, a direct competitor.

Do I have that right?

What the actual fuck?

@gpowerf I'll wait a couple weeks to see how many get frustrated and abandon it before calling that.

The transition isn't as easy as many seem to hope it is.

This is like asking people to boycott 711 because it doesn't sell weed in states where doing so is illegal.

When auto CEOs say they can't afford to pay their workers more, remember that the Big Three have made a combined $21 billion in profits in the first half of 2023 and $250 billion in profits over the decade.

They've also spent $5 billion on stock buybacks the past year.

Hello?

@CptSuperlative Pretty sure that's one of many features that were excluded to try to prevent the "piling on" behaviour so common in Twitter. It is, for example, why there are no quote toots.

Airbus open sourced their new cockpit font. Make it the default for all your embedded projects, because it's REALLY good and has real testing in difficult environments!

@aljazeera How about they boycott the government for passing the stupid law that they knew was bound to cause this? Or boycott the traditional media companies that lobbied for the law knowing it would cause this?

Canada asked for this. Boycotting Meta for giving them what they asked for is pointless.

@helenczerski Well, yeah, but that works a lot better in places where the roads descend from ancient footpaths.

But in cities built around cars, it would just be a nightmare.
