@remixtures Well that just goes against the entire spirit of why S230 was written. Hopefully it's overturned on appeal.

@alysondecker @annmlipton Also, describing my quoting from the IRS's official instructions on the document we're discussing (with citation!) as "googling and incorrectly reading things" is just uncalled for.

@alysondecker @annmlipton I recognize your expertise. I'm asking you to explain why this is wrong.

@ticktok That's ridiculous.

Every time I run into a major bug, I start getting mad "What the hell! I paid good money for.... oh wait, no I didn't."

The absolute worst thing about is that when I run into a bug, I have no one to be justifiably mad at.

@alysondecker @annmlipton Hmm... the IRS's instructions for the 1099 form seem to indicate otherwise:

"Do not include wages, any bonuses, prizes, and awards paid to your employees. Report these on Form W-2."

Are rideshare cuts not considered wages, bonuses, prizes, or awards?

irs.gov/instructions/i1099mec

@alysondecker @annmlipton Wait, but a 1099 is, by definition, an independent contractor, right? If they have an "employer", they should no longer qualify for 1099 and have to be W2 or something, right?

I uninstalled a few weeks back but I still can't stop thinking about what a failure it was.

Like, they have this beautiful aesthetic that's a sci-fi version of NASA at its peak during the moon race... yet somehow they didn't include a soundtrack from that era... despite the fact that they did that exact thing to great acclaim in the series. It would have been so easy and would have made the game so much better.

I wouldn't mind walking through empty worlds so much if there was good music. Then it would feel like a road trip!

@alysondecker @annmlipton Interesting. Who's normally responsible for checking that? In a regular 1099, we have clients, not employers, so it can't be the employer. And, as I understand it, the IRS doesn't care about much more than getting its cut, right?

@annmlipton Wait, I thought they were independent contractors. Would they even need work permits if the rideshare platform didn't W2 them?

@annmlipton Or it could be like a family sharing one car all using the same account.

It's also possible that it's similar to selling video game accounts; if it's hard to get from zero to a respectable account, then selling people an advanced start would be a valuable service.

@maxkennerly Seems to me that it's comparable to spam detectors. They'll never be 100% because it's an arms race. But yeah, some will definitely be better than others.

@wndlb Sure, but those analysts listen to the stockholders.

And yeah, no kidding it's a sell. I'd sell Burger King stock if they announced they were starting a streaming platform.

Companies need to learn to stick to what they're good at.

This is the kind of bullshit that happens when a public company needs to increase its already insane revenue to please shareholders.

If humans would just be comfortable with major profits instead of demanding endless profits, we'd have nicer things.

I don’t see this succeeding at all for Netflix. I hope they have something else up their sleeve. Why Netflix Is Opening Permanent Retail Locations ...

@TechpriestBaunach Still nowhere near as useful as a forum or stackexchange. If you search a discussion, it's just as likely that there is no answer than it is that there is an answer and you just can't find it. Plus, you'll have to search through the same questions over and over that are harder to police as duplicates.

Liz Cheney is absolutely correct in this: “Jim Jordan was involved in Trump's conspiracy to steal the election and seize power; he urged that Pence refuse to count lawful electoral votes. If Rs nominate Jordan to be Speaker, they will be abandoning the Constitution. They’ll lose the House majority and they’ll deserve to.”

@samlitzinger Unfortunately, you'd be cutting off the wrong half. Those of us on the peninsula are fun and liberal vacation spots. It's the assholes in the panhandle who want to control everyone.

@mentallyalex I think I know exactly what you're talking about.

There's a reason that a stereotype exists of game developers starting their careers young with 60 hour weeks and then retiring in their mid-30s to become woodworkers and such (in my case, piloting).

It seems pretty common that, the more we understand about technology (and how it interacts with society), the less we want to use it.

@jessamyn It's crazy that anyone ever feels a need to reply off-hours. When I was a CTO, I made it a policy not to have my email on my phone, and I recommended that to all my employees. If something was urgent, I'd text or call. Anything in an email could wait till morning.
