@Muscaria @greenpeace It's not, directly. But plastics are a byproduct of oil refining and oil refining emits a shitload of GHG.

Just so proud of Mastodon today.

These times are very challenging. Rather than descend into an abyss of fake news and stident acrimony, somehow Mastodon seems to be largely maintaining a civil tone and self regulating misinformation.

It is pretty amazing to see an open social media community functioning this well given the meltdown across other platforms.

Let's continue to demand accuracy and civility while we debate these seminal issues. Let Mastodon be the beacon in these dark times.

@ThinkingSapien Modern dating apps aren't designed for reading profiles. They're all about swiping on pictures. The ones that were about reading profiles and making actual connections sold out to the hookup apps.

Just spent over an hour trying to get apache to display an HTML page only to figure out I missed a single slash in a configuration file and it just silently failed.

We really deserve more robust error reporting.

@ThinkingSapien That also does not seem like the healthiest diet for the animals...

@braindouche No, that's a perfectly reasonable expectation, but the hiring/interviewing process does need to specifically select for it.

Anyone who can't do regular HTML and JS should not call themselves a web developer and should not be hired as one.

Journalists are loudly fretting today about the difficulties of covering fast-moving stories where they have to change headlines and more to reflect their failure to cover the story properly in the first place.

In other words, everyone else is to blame for bad journalism.

@kegill I assume the "step out of the car" was for the reckless driving, to administer a breathalyzer, which would be reasonable under the circumstances, but was still handled terribly.

No idea on the county, but, if I recall correctly, it wouldn't really matter, because Georgia has a separation of duties between highway patrol and local county sheriffs.

@kegill Oh, I've gotten that exact same "Super Speeder" ticket on 75 in southern Georgia.

Granted, I wasn't "driving recklessly", but I wasn't even asked to step out of my car. They just gave me the ticket and sent me on my merry way.

@kegill More needless escalation... all the more reason to question why we allow traffic cops to be armed with deadly weapons in the first place.

Okay, has become shockingly good at corporate logo creation (other than spelling/text).

Which actually makes sense since that's a vacuous field that has been nearly devoid of real creativity for a few decades now.

@freemo Everyone still does support freedom of speech here. We just can't agree on its definition, lol.

Calling all pilots and #avgeeks

I just stumbled on metar-taf.com, which has a very user-friendly interface and a livestream of real-time WX at any reporting airport.

Not affiliated or anything, just thought I’d pass this along. Search for your airport in upper right corner. Then hit the LIVESTREAM link at top. Enjoy!

@freemo Yeah, but the good news is that those same forces can be used to break the cycle, if enough people choose to do so.

I.e., simply having heated-but-polite intellectual debates in public where both sides tear apart the other's ideas without disrespecting the person is setting a positive example.

@freemo The few friends I have who are capable of this get annoyed when I try it. Too many people feel personally attacked when someone challenges their ideas.

One friend I have cannot stop talking out of his ass, very confidently, mind you, on subjects about which he knows nothing. When I simply ask the kind of questions that reveal how hollow his positions are, he gets frustrated and raises his voice.

So many people think religion is to blame for having beliefs so strong, you're willing to commit violence in their name... but it seems to me that human nature itself is far more to blame than religion.

@freemo Sounds about proportional to our relative lifespans and childhood age ranges.
