Much smarter version of what I've been saying the last couple days:
@Av8rdan Gotcha, that makes sense. I'm a member of AOPA, and I'm gonna have to look into EAA.
Just wanted to make sure you didn't drop your membership because of something bad they did that I didn't know about (kind of like how so many gun owners hate the NRA, despite that organization nominally representing them).
@peterdrake Sometimes I think difficulty menus should be inverted and named by age. You start with the ultra-difficult "for kids" mode and work your way through life to the easy narrative-only "geriatric" mode.
@Av8rdan For someone newer to the field like me, are there specific reasons you're not a member of others that you'd care to share?
There's little good video on former US ambassador Nikki Haley being asked a ambush question at a Berlin, New Hampshire 'town hall' meeting. So here's a transcript from my own fair hands.
Haley: "Yes sir?"
Audience member: "Thank you Ambassador."
Haley: "Thank you."
Audience member: "Please, what was the cause of the United States' Civil War?"
Haley [turns away, smiles, sarcastic tone]: "Well don't come with an easy question."
Haley [addressing questioner]: "Well I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run. The freedoms and what people could and couldn't do. What do you think the cause of the Civil War was?"
Audience member [inaudible].
Haley: "I'm sorry?"
Audience member [loudly]: "I'm not running for President. I wanted to see your view on the cause of the Civil War."
Haley: "I mean I think it always comes down to the role of government. And what the rights of the People are. And we, I, will always stand by the fact the government was always intended to secure the rights and freedoms of the People and was never meant to be all things to all people. Government doesn't need to be able to tell you how to life your life, they don't need to tell you what you can and can't do, the don't need to be a part of your life, they need to make sure you have freedom. We need to have capitalism, we need to have economic freedom, we need to make sure we do all things to make sure that individuals have the liberties so that they can have freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to do or be anything they want to be without government getting in the way.
Audience member: "In 2023, it’s astonishing to me that you would answer that question without mentioning the word 'slavery'."
Haley [holds out hand towards questioner]: "What do you want me to say about slavery?"
Audience member: "You’ve answered my question."
Haley [purses lips, retreats to rear of stage]: "Next question."
Audience: [some clapping].
Some useful background is that Haley is a Republican politician seeking to become their candidate for US President at the 2024 election. She was previously state Governor of South Carolina. That's the state where the US Civil War officially started, and therefore you'd think a bit of a gimme question. The AP news service points out that the state's Declaration of Secession (1860) begins by mentioning slavery as the first point of contention with the northern states.
"The State of South Carolina having resumed her separate and equal place among nations, deems it due to herself, to the remaining United States of America, and to the nations of the world, that she should declare the immediate causes which have led to this act:
" - An increasing hostility on the part of the non-slaveholding States to the institution of slavery..."
@baldur At least for code completion, that's simply not true. There's an old adage in software engineering: Novice programmers take code from StackOverflow. Experienced programmers take the *right* code from StackOverflow.
@vga256 Having been through that process myself, no, but I'd read a site with post-mortems from indie studios who have released games all day long.
Florida went so Florida that it couldn't even fit it all in the headline, JFC.

@AndyKotlarz @wdlindsy Do you typically have an audience when conversing with your landlord? More importantly, you only convince an audience if you win the debate; the potential for backfire can't be discounted.
However, in this example, the audience are the people on Yelp. Hence why I can be much more effective by writing reviews than by confronting the nazi landlord directly.
Navalny is fighting violent fascists with the power of the state at their disposal. That's a very different situation to opposing peaceful citizens who happen to be hatemongers. In the latter case, disassociation, shame, and shunning are proportionate responses.
@AndyKotlarz @wdlindsy In my experience, there's not much point reasoning with people who are pro-genocide, and in some cases, attempting to do so can be actively dangerous.
Shunning and deplatforming tend to have a much better risk:reward ratio.
Also, if the owner is a Nazi, then the property might as well have that "Nazis welcome" sign. If Nazis want to associate with other Nazis, that's their right.
@AndyKotlarz @wdlindsy Probably not, unless asked. But after moving out, I would post it on Yelp and such so others can make an informed decision.
@AndyKotlarz @wdlindsy I mean, I probably wouldn't break my lease and pay penalties, but I also wouldn't renew it either. Ultimately, yes, I'd have a problem with a Nazi profiting from me in that manner.
@AndyKotlarz @wdlindsy No, the owners of Substack have chosen to associate with Nazis, by choosing to continue to do business with them.
So, that leaves you with a value judgement to make. Do you want to continue participating in and supporting a platform that supports Nazis?
If a Nazi moves into a house in your neighborhood, there is no implicit support involved by coexisting with them.
But when you choose to go to a business that profits from them spreading their hate, now you're an active participant in a system that legitimizes them.
@freemo No, it was definitely remarkable, if only for the big black monolith's presence.
@AndyKotlarz @wdlindsy Drinking water and breathing air are not choices; they are necessities.
Associating with Nazis is a choice.
@jaythurbershow @pluralistic Think of the poor multi-billion-dollar corporations, though, and how they'll go broke if they don't charge you more for a service that is getting objectively worse over time.
@pepita @carnage4life You mean exactly like humans have been doing around office water coolers for centuries?
@carnage4life Gotcha. I haven't felt the need to pay extra for 4.
Wouldn't it still be limited to accessing the preview parts of articles that non-subscribers see, though?
