@freemo @jenny_wu @realcaseyrollins @robryk I mean, maybe you could charge them with fraud? But I doubt there's a criminal law specifically for that.

@freemo @realcaseyrollins @jenny_wu @robryk Even then, I doubt it. Now, if the lawyer was there at the robbery holding a gun with their client... 😀

@freemo @realcaseyrollins @jenny_wu @robryk That's not illegal, though; just a basis for appeal.

Dealing with incompetency in lawyer circles is generally left to the bar associations, from what I understand.

@realcaseyrollins @jenny_wu @freemo @robryk At best, you can appeal a judgement on the basis of incompetent counsel after it's been rendered, but from what I've heard, that's a *very* uphill battle.

@jenny_wu @realcaseyrollins @freemo @robryk He chose his lawyers. He can fire them at any time if he's not happy with their service.

@jenny_wu @realcaseyrollins @freemo @robryk No, that's also not the job of lawyer. Their job is to inform him. If he then makes the decision to act like a jackass, that's not the lawyers' fault at all. They're not social workers.

@realcaseyrollins @jenny_wu @freemo @robryk Bingo. "Burn in hell" is classic expressive speech and protected opinion, and that's before you add the context that it was posted on social media by a known blowhard.

@JasonPerseus Better yet, don't use AI for *any* important research, with the possible exception of linguistics.

@jenny_wu @realcaseyrollins @freemo @robryk Of course they can, but restricting a defendant from voicing an opinion is generally an unreasonable restriction. Restricting him from intimidating witnesses, otoh, is reasonable.

@freemo Yeah, I think that's just bad journalism. Pretty sure the gag order was specifically overruled in regards to Smith (but upheld wrt his staff) since he's a public figure. The article referenced by the linked article goes into his behaviour in a bit more detail.

Also, Chutkan clearly isn't fucking around. She's not afraid to wait for him to step over the line before bringing down the hammer.

"The allure of looms entices those people who fetishize fine textiles but dismiss the work. They're the people who tell knitters, "I'll give you the pattern, then you knit it, and we'll split the profits." For them, the vision is everything and the work is just an annoying obstacle. But the WORK is everything. The work is how a thing happens, where it's made, where skill is put to work. Looms in textiles are for the people who have no skill, no work, no effort, no ethic. They just want to push a flying shuttle."

I've been seeing this doing the rounds lately...

I imagine this is very similar to what the monks who spent their entire lives carefully hand-copying bibles felt about the printing press in the 1400s.

@loops @golgaloth I like both. I enjoy a 2-year-aged fine parmesan from Italy, but I also enjoy a grilled cheese with kraft singles.

There will always be a demand for hand-crafted artisanal products. That shouldn't stop us from making low-labor mass-produced versions available to those who can't afford the artisanal versions.

@realcaseyrollins @jenny_wu @freemo @robryk Vocally supporting violence is protected by the first amendment. Committing or inciting violence is not.

@freemo It would be a huge violation, but that's not what's gonna land him in jail. Courts have already determined that his criticism of Jack Smith, including rhetoric like "rot in hell" is political and covered under 1A. It would be wrong for him to end up in jail over that.

However, he's still attacking court clerks online, and intimidating witnesses. Either of those are perfectly valid reasons for a brief jail sentence for contempt of court.

@intransitivelie As someone who is meme-ignorant and often seeks additional context in alt-text, the extra explanation would often be helpful. But there is something to the fact that too much explanation ruins comic timing.
