@georgetakei The erosion of seaside cliffs and the movement of the tectonic plates makes for gorgeous landscapes that few can deny are artful.
The blooming of of flowers, with or without human guidance, is a work of art, as is the brilliant burst of red light caused by an oblique angle through our atmosphere at sunset.
A photo, captured, processed, and retouched on the same artificial materials that run AIs, are unquestionably art.
I see no reason that a network of silicon and copper, built and trained by humans, can't make art too.
@strypey The reason "only the government can censor" is because the government can shut down your speech *everywhere*. Private actors can only set rules for their own property. Facebook "censors" you? Go to Twitter or TikTok or YouTube. The wide variety of competing services (and your freedom to self-host) that allow you to easily broadcast your speech make the maxim *more* true, not less.
@cc587 So what? Tightening and replacing bolts is standard maintenance. If that wasn't done (properly), they may be liable.
@maxkennerly Let's not jump to conclusions. I've seen a lot of people blame Boeing, but the NTSB hasn't released that info yet. It could very well be Alaska Air's fault for not properly maintaining the craft.
We should wait for the NTSB report before blaming anyone.
@weberam2 Follow people who people you follow follow. Follow people who seem vaguely interesting.
Without the algorithm, follows should be *much* cheaper (you can always unfollow later).
If you don't build up a good base of people to follow, this place will seem barren. But once you get that good list, it's just as lively and fun as anywhere else.
Also, consider setting up Lists based on hashtags you find interesting; that'll also help you to find new people to follow.
As for servers, QOTO is a good one. The only reason I'd seriously consider switching is if I someday launch my own instance.
Vehicles that make frequent stops (like school buses) are the sweet spot for battery-electric power. Regenerative braking recovers energy and makes the friction brakes last far longer.
It’s also safer and cleaner for everyone, especially kids.
Kudos to the Biden administration for investing in cleaner, greener school buses.

@strypey The authors of the platform don't need to stretch definitions. They can remove whoever they want for any reason. And that's not censorship (only the government can truly censor), because it doesn't extend past the bounds of their private property; rather it's their 1A right to disassociation.
They already chose not to associate with pornography and nobody complains about that. Yet despite having clear rules, they choose to continue to associate with and profit from known white supremacists. That's their right, sure, but it unmasks their values and the rest of us are free to choose not to do business with them as a result.
@baldur Not all art has to be some bespoke handcrafted beauty.
Sure, sometimes you need a gorgeous bit of landscape concept art, but other times you just need a repeating stone texture, or a placeholder to fill in while you hook things up.
For the tedious "art" that nobody actually wants to do, I'm happy to use a cheap automated service that delivers results.
@annmlipton He's the guy who actually invented the grill that George Foreman put his name on. He recently ate some really bad limburger cheese on social media and one of his fans filmed a vomit reaction shot and now it's being used by anti-bulimia charities as a PSA. #lowqualityfacts
@gerowen No, I saw that, I just don't understand how people are still saying it in 2024. Musk has taken off his mask so many times now that nobody should be surprised by what's underneath anymore.
@gerowen "So much for"?
@rticks Except it doesn't "work better than we do". Germany is an incredibly censorious state, banning many symbols and ideologies, and throwing people *in jail* for calling each other "freeloaders".
Besides, Germany is an odd choice since you only have to look back less than a hundred years to see very sinister uses of such censorious laws by a truly evil government.
The idea that bad actors couldn't once more take hold of these institutions and use them against the very people they're meant to protect is, well, naive at least.
@rticks They're not meant to be.
But freedom of speech only works when it is message-agnostic. Giving the government the ability to punish pro-nazi speech just guarantees that the government will punish anti-nazi speech when the nazis gain power.
In other words, by attempting to deny the nazis their rights, you're helping them out and doing their job for them.
@mentallyalex Here's hoping the last 10% of your project is as creatively fulfilling as the first 10%!
@rticks As long as they only talk about it, yes, that's protected. Just as protected as you talking about stripping them of their rights.
@carnage4life They do have a legitimate interest in preventing shovelware, which is very much enabled by AI, but I agree, it's a weird requirement.
That said, I'm generally not against more information for consumers to decide on, so 🤷♂️
@davoloid Trying to get facts out of an LLM is like trying to hammer a nail in with a screwdriver. Sometimes it works, but it's the wrong tool for the job.
@kegill Fwiw, it seems unclear at this point if the fault lies more with the manufacturer or the operator.
When I fly, I check every bolt before I ever sit in the cockpit. The vibrations from the engines love to kick bolts out, and if they're missing, I don't fly until the mechanics replace them.
If the airlines aren't properly checking the bolts, or are not doing so often enough, then this might not be Boeing's fault at all.
@strypey Substack does get to decide what to offer on their platform, and who to do business with.
And the rest of us get to decide if we want to boycott those who choose to profit from Nazis.
Both are examples of freedom of expression in action.
