This made me laugh - Jason Goldman’s take on joinmastodon being banned from Twitter

A mob of red deer stags in Richmond Park, they were on the edge of the woods and unless you stopped to look from most angles they were perfectly hidden, I crouched down to take the shot, that's when I could see how many there were (shot with a long lens it looks like I was a lot closer than I actually was). #RichmondPark #RedDeer #Stags #RedStags #WildLifePhotography #Nature #Photography #AltText

@lxo @freemo The difference is that, in my proposed version, UFoI would lead by example with democratic due process instead of the current leaders who act more arbitrarily.

@freemo Some might not, sure. But those same instances would never even consider joining in the first place otherwise.
I think the binding resolution is scaring people off. If it were more of a "lead-by-example" system, I think people would be more likely to take it in good faith.

But I'm sure you've got your finger on that pulse better than I do.
Just a thought.

@freemo I agree that makes it non-binding, but it seems like it's enough of an image problem that it could kill the initiative if not addressed properly.

@freemo Have you all considered making the UFoI non-binding? I.e. instead of a "you-can't-block" list, it could be a "you-shouldn't-block" list. That would ameliorate many of the concerns that opposed admins have about "being forced to federate".

Another option would be to make it a two-tier system. "Member servers" agree to never block anyone on the list, and get full voting rights, while "Associate servers" aren't bound by the block list, but only get half voting rights.

@matthewsweet The replicators made money pointless. People worked to have purpose in their lives, not for money. This was actually directly addressed in the series (TNG, I think).

@mmasnick @elonjet Sorry to hear that. Hope you feel better soon. Schadenfreude is the best medicine.

Turing Twist

"For one weird year, I was the human who stepped in to make sure a property chatbot didn’t blow its cover – I was a person pretending to be a computer pretending to be a person"

theguardian.com/technology/202

@toxtethogrady @mmasnick I doubt it. This doesn't prevent the information from being publicly available from the FAA. It just prevents it from being reposted to Twitter.

@mmasnick Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't that wording also ban airlines from advertising routes?

@annmlipton Man, how do I get a cult that's so stupid they're willing to pay me to compliment me?

No, skepticism of crypto doesn't "stem from lack of understanding".

Skepticism of crypto stems from it being an endless barrage of fraud, scams and the worst of human greed and criminality.

@denebeim @Popehat That's perfectly reasonable.

Unfortunately, some people are taking it a step further: They're defederating from any instance that doesn't also block the same instances they do.

@oliphant @jbc_3 @freakazoid @Popehat It was started, not as a "sneaky end run around being blocked", but rather as a means to add transparency and a proper process to prevent servers from getting blocked over false allegations.

The founder, the admin of QOTO, has even stepped down from any leadership role in UFoI to avoid any notion of impropriety.

@freakazoid @oliphant @Popehat I'm on the instance with the admin that started UFoI and... there aren't any fascists here that I've seen. It's mostly STEM folks and, if anything, leans a bit left. You may want to reconsider where you're getting your information from.

Also, fediblock, while a good idea in theory, is, in practice, opaque and full of false positives.

@chancerydaily How much of this is stuff he could wriggle out of by closing shop or having Twitter declare bankruptcy and how much would actually follow and stick to him after?

I, an adult, got frustrated trying to open an obtuse child-lock mechanism on a bag of tide pods so I used a pair of children's scissors to just cut it open instead.
