@raynetoday @w7voa The accounts were banned long before he took over.
If their names had become open for reuse at some point, then in theory, he wouldn't have been able to reinstate them, because others would have been able to take over the handles long before.
That's what makes me think it might keep banned names reserved under the hood.
Also, that would serve to prevent banned individuals from just re-opening their account when their old username becomes available again.

1.) Tech companies post record profits.
2.) Tech companies lay off tens of thousands of employees.
3.) Wait, where'd those pitchforks come from?

@NatlSecCnslrs Wait. IANAL, so correct me if I'm wrong, but does that basically say that the court decided the legal standard for "reasonable" was subjective and punted it to the department the court was meant to be checking and balancing?

@raynetoday @w7voa Are you sure that's true? I've been wondering if it was. Since Musk was able to unban all those old right-wing troll accounts, it makes me think that maybe it keeps the name reserved when banned.

@zoe @w7voa To be fair, I'd also probably be pretty entertained watching someone try to wrestle a pig.

Both situations make quite nice spectacles for the viewing public.

@w7voa Or better yet, do all that and don't get banned so your account remains up as a monument to his bad decisions:

I don't get why haggis has such a worse reputation than regular sausage.

I want a law to say that any elected official who tries to ban the beloved Robin Williams movie Ms. Doubtfire is immediately ejected from office and banned from holding future office.

Sarah Sanders would appear to be on the verge of inviting the first First Amendment lawsuit of her administration She’s a go getter https://www.ark...

@pebonilla To be clear, that law would ban a movie theater from screening Ms. Doubtfire, right?

The laws are serving their purpose - altering what is taught in the classroom.

"Nearly 1 in 4 said they have altered their curricula so parents and officials won’t find their teachings controversial. Teachers said they had to skip over classic texts like To Kill a Mockingbird and avoid historical figures like famed abolitionist Federick Douglass out of concern for parental complaints and possible legal blowback."

USPOL/Ukraine

Really excited to see the "guns don't kill people, people kill people" folks explain why it's bad that Germany is sending tanks to Ukraine.

@mmasnick I've never even been to DC, but I'm double-checking my sock drawer just to be safe.

Just sorting through some old stuff, and this seamless re-entry I did a while back was a lot of fun, but it was even better with appropriate background music that I can't afford to license.

@ThinkingSapien RAR isn't so bad, but when I see a tarball being used after the year 2000, I know someone is screwing with me.

It's incredible how much of a limiting factor "refuse to work for crypto scams" is for independent software engineers.

I could be making crazy money right now if I was just willing to help sheisters convince idiots to part with it.

Gun Law

@AmberWavesofFlame Fair. Although it certainly seems like, especially in the last decade or two, guns are going the way of cigarettes in the cultural subconscious.

Gun Law

@AmberWavesofFlame Other countries absolutely have mid-range weapons. Just off the top of my head:
The Israelis invented the Uzi, an automatic weapon with the form-factor of a pistol.
The Spanish & Brazilian governments both made a bunch of select-fire Mauser pistols.
The British produced the STEN, a full-auto weapon that fired standard 9mm pistol rounds.
And for something more recent, we have the P90, known for being compact and having an extremely fast firing speed, coming out of Belgium.

US Law is actually pretty good about drawing a clear line in the sand between semi-automatic and fully-automatic weapons, making all of the above illegal for regular citizens in the US. Which is why loophole devices, like bump-stocks, remain so contentious.

USPOL

Once again, the right accuses the left of censoring while trying to pass laws to enact actual censorship.

We're starting to have a real problem with book burning among the American right.

Drew Harwell
Sen. Hawley says he wants to ban TikTok for everyone in the U.S., where the app has more than 100 million users and a growing role in youth culture...

@AriCohn The effect is so strong, in fact, that it applies even to half-huskies.

Got progressive bifocals for the first time and its messing with my head. I've got pretty extensive natural peripheral vision too, so that's probably not helping.

I get the feeling I'm gonna be nauseated for a few days until I get used to these...
