@tshirtman Yes, it's terrible for active collaboration within files, but there are plenty of use cases where none of those downsides matter.

Attaching calendar invite link files would be the most obvious example where it works well.

Another would be that it's especially effective for isolated file-transactions that exist outside of a long-term relationship.

Also, while you're right that other methods are more efficient from the technical server-client perspective, email is usually far more efficient from the UX perspective, even today.

Calling for its abolition is like trying to abolish wrenches because some people erroneously use them like hammers.

@tshirtman Why would you want that killed? I mean, yeah, people need to be better educated about the risks, but it's very useful for many use cases.

@denki @georgetakei My point still stands, though, that the four "don'ts" mentioned in the post don't apply to the current generation of "AI".

@georgetakei Those "don'ts" apply to actual AI, not to LLMs. There's a big distinction between the two.

Implicit corollary: "work makes you free".

Tell me that's not saying the quiet part loud.

Of course now, only a day into the transition from HBO Max to Max, I start experiencing service issues.

Damn corporate overlords.

Navigating legal issues that impact transgender clients requires starting with understanding the terms and definitions that are used in this area.

These definitions are also useful for having more productive discussions with other people about sex and gender issues in our society without misunderstanding.

@peterdrake Well, most of those boxes are edge cases to begin with. Really, in Unity, there are only three configs you'll be using regularly for physics collision:
[A] static colliders (houses, terrain, etc)
[B] regular Rigidbodies (regular physics objects, i.e: books, crates, balls, etc.),
[C] kinematic Rigidbodies (physics objects driven by script, i.e.: the player or anything the player holds, some vehicles, objects with agency, etc.)

All three of those types will collide with each other.

Then, for colliders, best practice is to use MeshColliders as infrequently as possible. They're much less performant than the built-in colliders. You can use 10 BoxColliders to approximate a mesh and get better performance than a mesh collider. If you absolutely must use a mesh collider, there are two configs to use:
[A] convex on a rigidbody, for colliders that need to move or interact with physics
[B] static non-rigidbody, for (usually big) stuff that doesn't move. Can be convex (better performance) but doesn't have to be. This is the only config non-convex meshcolliders should ever be used in (terrain is the obvious example)

@peterdrake Take a look at the bottom of this doc page. It's got a table that shows, in depth, under which circumstances colliders will interact:
docs.unity3d.com/Manual/Collid

For MeshColliders, they have to be convex to work with Rigidbodies, so the only config they really tend to work in without being convex is when they're static (like a terrain).

@peterdrake Some of these are incorrect...

"Mesh Colliders can only collide with other Mesh Colliders if both of them have Convex set to true."
This isn't actually true. Convex mesh colliders can collide with static non-convex mesh colliders.

"For the position of a Collider component to move with its GameObject, the GameObject must have a RigidBody. Otherwise ... the Collider will not move ...the GameObject will appear to move across the screen, but ... the location of the Collider component will not be updated, and therefore the physical presence of the GameObject will remain in the same location." This description is only true for static GameObjects. Non-static colliders move just fine with their parent (although it's still a good idea to put them on a kinematic rigidbody).

"The constants in the Color class (like Color.red) don't follow the usual capitalization convention for constants (SCREAMING_SNAKE_CASE)." This one is correct, but worth noting it also applies to many of the math constants, like Vector2.one.

@marq From the fucking *Libertarians. Little-L libertarians would never support this bullshit. It's the Mises an-caps running the LP with the endlessly terrible takes.

@sluggard @Popehat I don't even have to look to know it's real. Ever since the Mises an-caps took over the party, it's been non-stop shitposts exactly like this.

@Popehat How do we get the clownish incompetent Libertarian leadership back? At least they were good for a laugh.

The tragic demise of Dexter Barry, a heart transplant recipient, after two days in jail without his life-sustaining medication, should elicit profound outrage. Barry was arrested on a simple assault charge, accused of threatening his neighbor.

Barry repeatedly emphasized his medical needs to officers and judges, pleas that fell on deaf ears. Eventually, his body rejected his transplanted heart, resulting in his untimely death. To dismiss such a critical need on grounds of an allegedly trivial disagreement amounts to an unsettling dereliction of duty, one that echoes the unsavory autocracies of the 20th century.
