@axios Why would you write an article about this petition and not link to it???
@baldwinjed @arstechnica The issue isn't open source, but rather open access.
@Smokinjoe @arstechnica Didn't read the article, huh?
@arstechnica ...they could solve like 99% of the data privacy issues by just requiring a wired connection.
@jeffjarvis There's a reason why google fired that engineer who thought their AI had become sentient. For every one hysterical crackpot in the tech industry, there are a hundred more sensible people with realistic expectations. Neither LLMs nor social media are going to "kill tens of millions". What they will do is reinforce some biases and make life worse for some minorities (but, really, what big system doesn't do that?). We can work on improving these things, but the hysterics don't help anyone.
#DIDYOUKNOW If a publication runs a big headline reporting someone entered a not guilty plea at their first court appearance, as if that’s news, you are legally permitted to punch the managing editor in the crotch three (3) times
@interfluidity Yeah, I tried that myself. The ones you can run locally are... limited. Both in quality and (especially) in speed.
@freemo It's also a very old design. I think the popularity is more from its use as a standard military sidearm in WWI/II moreso than its ergonomics/accessibility.
@GregCirillo @w7voa There are plenty of decent people who don't get their panties in a bunch over nudity.
That said, what they did was wrong because it violated the social contract they agreed upon when entering the grounds.
If you're a fan of MASH and are interested in LLMs, check out Alan Alda's (Hawkeye) podcast. He recently did an episode where he prodded an AI until it generated a MASH scene, but the cool part is that he invited Mike Farrell (BJ Hunnicut) to act it out with him!
The scene sucks, but it's cool to hear those old guys fall right back into their old characters!
@saramg Oh, I feel this post in my bones, lol
24 hours of Earth's rotation, with the camera locked to the sky instead of the ground. We're all hanging out on this spinning rock.
Brilliant video by Bartosz Wojczyński. https://artuniverse.eu/gallery/190705-rotation24h #nature #wonder #earth
You have to admit, regardless of your political beliefs, that a guy going to federal prison for years because that's the punishment for the crime because when he himself was president he signed an order to mandate a minimum sentence for that exact crime is hands down the funniest shit that could ever happen and we are nanometers away from that once-in-a-lifetime hysterical occurrence from taking place.
You have to want this to happen, you just have to.
When I was a kid, there was a mythical book shared only in the darkest corners of the internet called "The Anarchist's Cookbook" that described how to make explosive compounds and chemical weapons.
Today, that information is freely available on Wikipedia if you know the correct scientific search terms.
Lol.
I'm sorry if you're of the generation that's never used a dot-matrix printer. I still remember mine from the 80s and 90s, and they were dope AF:
- Made cool sounds when printing
- Paper as a perforated form-feed, and tearing the perforations after printing was *so* satisfying
- You could re-ink your own ribbons with whatever ink you had at hand
- Manufacturer wasn't trying to screw you at every possible term
- Software focused on birthdays cards and banners, not "business" or "out of cyan"
The legal manual I was given to read to get my Florida concealed carry license is *bonkers*. It's full of first person subjective opinions, and reads like a stream-of-thought diatribe from a terrible lawyer. Here are some gems:
"There are some limitations on where you can carrying[sic] concealed. Some of these make good sense, some do not."
"Having a Concealed Weapons License is the smartest thing anyone can do"
"It means you are not criminally liable for driving through a school zone with a firearm!"
"Of course, there are no cases interpreting this facet [...] and therefore, even though I am totally confident in my opinion, if you want to be safe, stick to the weapons listed."
"get arrested because somebody on the government side is too chicken to stand up against possible adverse publicity"
"If you don't think there are forces out there that would love to see you disarmed, and easy prey for everything and everybody -- you better start getting educated, because the battle is raging around you, every single day."
"I would consider an arrest under these circumstances to be unlawful."
"I gotta leave my protection home because some damn Mouse is anti-gun?"
Just a friendly reminder, not all of us have the spoons or mental space to deal with US politics in all its horror (and maybe glory?).
I'm happy to use filters to curate my timeline, but when you get cute with putting asterisks in words you bypass filters. Just write the word, let us protect ourselves.
Because getting cute with partial censoring of words actually causes more harm than pretending to obfuscate a word.
@evilmicrowizard The one I explicitly called out: "the evil guy we all hate did this thing, so that justifies us doing it to him."
