@charlotteclymer Who are you subtooting?
@iuculano I agree that the book banning is deeply problematic, but I don't think it's "authoritarian" until the books are banned from *everywhere*, including regular libraries and bookstores.
That parents still have the choice to go to a public library and check the book out for their kids does support the "parental rights" narrative.
@iuculano @toplesstopics @Melisondra The amount of space text takes up is negligible compared to things like photos or GIFs.
You could literally fit over 5,000 max-length messages in the size it takes to store one max-size GIF.
@denbib You'd think if she studied misinformation, she'd be more careful about spreading it. Harvard, being a private institution, cannot "violate" her right to free speech.
I will never understand how reporting on important events that determine the very fate of our species is the same job as reporting which celebrity has a crush on who.
@NPR How the fuck is this news?
Is there really nothing else going on in the world?
@kevinrns Isn't this a catch-22 program? How many low-to-moderate-income households even own their home?
@ThinkingSapien Yeah, these days it seems you have to go to Discord to get community dev support for pretty much anything.
@mentallyalex @TonyStark Because they're ignorant and scared. Same way some people freak out and run away from a friendly dog. You can try to reason with them, but ultimately tribal instincts and false assumptions instilled from a young age take over in moments of fear and panic. Left untreated, they grow into full-blown hateful ideologies.
@peterdrake I can't stand those systems where you don't actually have to put the key in the slot.
@bgrinter @carnage4life @briankrebs Safari has its own issues (Apple's monopolistic behaviour wrt browser choice stagnated innovation).
Firefox is the better choice, at least on non-Apple devices.
@emilygorcenski Every other version, yes. But the ones in between are great.
Rules to help journalists avoid the mistakes of 2016 in 2024:
- Ban repeat liars from live interviews
- Never put a lie in the headline
- Use a truth sandwich when reporting on lies
- Don’t take the bait (stop rewarding drama with visibility)
- Abandon the social media algorithm (don’t let Xitter dictate the news cycle)
Any others?

@KenWalkerQB @Ulrich_the_Elder Maybe, or a plugin? You also mentioned you're on Linux, right? That could be a factor. I'm running on Windows.
