@JoshuaHolland How is that "fascism"?
Wait, am I supposed to be deleting #mastodon notifications after reading them?
@georgetakei Sure, the same way Guiness world records is the beer company. In both cases, the tangential products exist to keep you driving/drinking.
@Jason844 Yeah, but at least those were entertainment products. This is just a cup. The same that we've been drinking from since the dawn of our species. If it told jokes or came with a media subscription or even just had googly eyes, I'd maybe understand it a bit more.
@micahflee How does that compare to the general average criminal defendant?
@Landa @ml @academicchatter Same reason for hotel art: to fill space. Not everything in life has to be bespoke.

@AnnemarieBridy Guess that's what happens after years of them giving us the cold shoulder.
@Strandjunker Yep, I'll take option number 2, thank you very much.
I’m in a reflective mood this week and it’s kind of wild to me that I’m known as a “provocateur” in #cybersecurity for takes like:
💡 don’t shame victims
💡 UX matters, a lot
💡we should understand what we’re supposed to protect
💡 if someone clicking a thing on the thing-clicking machine leads to security failure, they are not the foolish one
💡 the best things a security program can invest in aren’t in the RSAC vendor hall
💡 maybe we should start actually proving outcomes??????????
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If I were starting out today, I'd avoid employers who have dominant market positions. Through litigation, lobbying and other anti-competitive practices, they've usually tipped the playing field strongly in their favour. That's not the best field to learn to play on. When you eventually find yourself playing on a level field, you may come to realise you're not as good as you thought you were.
@carnage4life Yeah, that sounds correct.
So much of game development is prioritization. If you can use a machine to take care of the small, low-priority tasks, that frees up the humans to deal with the more important stuff. But, then you need fewer, more-experienced humans instead of an army of pixel-painters.
So, much like any automation, it's killing the shitty jobs, but hopefully in the long run, it'll be shifting those into new good jobs.
@carnage4life Fwiw, VR *is* there. Reasonably-priced and works well.
But the tech just isn't there for AR yet. I'm curious to see how well the AVP works, but I'm betting the people who drop almost $4K are going to be disappointed.
Apple's just a bit *too* far ahead of the curve this time.
@ml @academicchatter Why does it matter? Do people read those blogs, slide presentations, or videos for the pictures they contain? If they don't care about the quality and their audience doesn't care about the quality, and they just need something to fill the blanks, why make another human put in the work for something that ultimately is totally meaningless?
Let a machine handle that busywork.
@baldur Any genuine tech advancements tend to derail entire economies. Just look at the advancement of automation in agriculture. But then we adjust and move on; that can't be a reason to reject progress.
Since the tech has actual utility and isn't pure grifter-bait (like cryptocurrency), I'm pretty confident it will stabilize into a mature industry eventually.
@jknodlseder @jaztrophysicist @cazencott Bingo. If we can spend the energy equivalent of a small nation on printing monopoly money, then why does it matter how much we spend on something actually useful?
@baldur On the contrary. This isn't blockchain. It has many valid uses, and those who refuse to get on board are going to be left behind.
I mean, sure, there is currently an out-of-control hype train and it's causing the square peg of ML to be jammed into round holes, but once that's over, the tech will be around to stay in the hundreds of niches where it really excels.
