@mmasnick I actually thought you embedded porn into TechDirt by accident because TikTok's interface is so terrible that the default play button in the middle of the screen plays a video of a woman in a skin tight body suit making seductive comments instead of the bearded man giving a business interview that I expected.
I don't know how TikTok's algorithm thinks these are "related videos".
#Oklahoma officials caught on tape complaining that they can no longer murder Black people with impunity and this fact means that, "They got more rights than we got.”
Just got an #LLM running locally in a container as a microservice that I can now easily invoke from other programs... the possibilities are endless!
Based on a notification that quickly disappeared, it would seem someone popped in the replies to this post to prove me right.
It's weird how there's this dogma around AR-15s, even on the liberal side, that's so strong that people refuse to even consider facts that don't support their unfounded beliefs.
The number of people who have been irrevocably convinced that AR-15s somehow produce more deadly wounds than other firearms is getting disturbing.
Where did this rumor start from? Why would these people think those bullets are somehow more destructive when fired from a specific form factor of rifle?
I'm used to people who don't know about guns making shit up to justify their arguments, but this one is weirdly specific and pervasive.
It's a weird time to be a rocket science fan. Because, on one hand, we're going back to the moon!
But on the other hand, fuck SpaceX and its owner.
It's like finding out the government is partnering up with Dr. Evil to give every citizen a free puppy. Sounds nice on the surface, but you just know there's something sinister going on.
So, my weekend project was trying to learn #Python with the help of an #LLM. It's convinced me further that these models just aren't ready for production usage quite yet, but they're incredible for students, if you have enough generalized experience to be able to recognize when they're talking out their asses.
Still, felt like a better-than-90% accuracy rate and the ability to customize its answers and follow basic logic and context from question to question is really quite impressive. These models have already evolved far beyond what I thought their capabilities could be, and I look forward to seeing just how finely-tuned people can get them.
Here is a good example. AP headline on the loss of rights by half of Florida’s citizens is “Abortion bans raise fears inside GOP about backlash in 2024”. Framing this as a weak rhetorical move rather than active oppression. Pretty consistent framing of these moves across the country. Rather than “GOP takes away more rights from citizens” it is “GOP appeals to base - will it improve their chances in 2024?”
Pathetic
🚀 Tech has literally got to the point where you can now use SDKs to talk to things in space!
🛰️ Literally - here's a tutorial to download data from a real pulic satellite!

On a related note, I fucking *hate* companies that demand my phone number when they don't really need it.
Today's PSA: (because, apparently, this is shocking to people). It's OK for corporations to make less money. It's OK for shareholders to receive less value.
No, they don't have to raise prices on their consumers. No, they don't have to cut wages or benefits. They're choosing to.
If your perpetually ascending profit model only works because you exploit your labor, then your profit model deserves no sympathy, fretting, or hand-wringing.
You can, and should, make less profit.
