Very good news.

"The EU is planning a compulsory licensing system to allow it to take control of the manufacture of drugs and vaccines during a public health emergency, despite calls from pharmaceutical groups to protect patents"

“Generative network modeling reveals quantitative definitions of bilateral symmetry exhibited by a whole insect brain connectome”, Pedigo et al. 2023 elifesciences.org/articles/837

“This important work demonstrates a significant asymmetry between the connectivity statistics of the left and right hemispheres of the Drosophila larva brain. The evidence supporting the conclusions is compelling and represents a first step toward the development of statistical tests for comparing pairs of connectomes more generally.”

'Under pressure from their government, Chinese scientists have withheld data, withdrawn genetic sequences from public databases and altered crucial details in journal submissions. Western journal editors enabled those efforts by agreeing to those edits or withdrawing papers for murky reasons, a review by The Times of over a dozen retracted papers found.'

'Cancers that pass from one host to another are rare in nature, but can have devastating effects, says study co-author Rodrigo Hamede, a disease ecologist at the University of Tasmania in Hobart. “In a matter of 10 years, we lost between 60–70% of the overall [devil] population,” he says.'

"Yet officials with the National Academies have kept quiet about one thing: their decision to accept roughly $19 million in donations from members of the Sackler family, the owners of Purdue Pharma, the maker of the drug OxyContin that is notorious for fueling the opioid epidemic."

@lzvolk "A solid lid isn’t a perfect deterrent. I’ve been using one for years, and still the fruit flies hover, as if waiting for me to lapse. So I recently added one final hack, per experts’ advice, and diluted the produce in my bin with some used paper towels and shredded news clips."

@lzvolk Here are most of them, if that helps with the identification. They stopped laying eggs during the winter, but when spring came, it was a bonanza.

@lzvolk I wish I knew! We just got them at the local farmer's fair (also there are three ducks in the mix, so that amps up the diversity - and the eggs are delicious, with giant yolks).

'Não repara quem está distraído: a extrema-direita em barda recorre aos tribunais para processar ativistas, políticos e quem se destaca no espaço público em defesa do antirracismo, da igualdade, do combate à desigualdade e do progressismo.'

Depressing to see how endemic corruption has become in the nexus of Big Pharma, academia, and government: National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine took money for opioid policy work from the criminal family that instrumental in hooking and killing countless people. nytimes.com/2023/04/23/health/

"Transplantation of hNSCs has been shown to increase the number of CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ T regulatory cells (Tregs) in the spinal cords of murine models of MS, which is correlated with a strong localized remyelination response. However, the mechanisms by which hNSC transplantation leads to an increase in Tregs in the CNS remains unclear."

'To appreciate this catastrophe, we’ve got to move the focus off humans, at least for a bit. H5N1 is devastating the world’s birds. Eagles are dropping dead, as are great horned owls and peregrine falcons and pelicans. Twenty California condors recently died of what’s suspected to be avian flu — 10 are confirmed so far. It’s the worst thing that has happened to wild birds since the pesticide DDT.'
