You'd think we knew a lot about the long-term sequelae of Long Covid from these 10 reports at 2 years.
Unfortunately, there's still much we don't know, as explained here https://erictopol.substack.com/p/long-term-long-covid

Such an eloquent reminder of why so many of us originally showed up at this door.
‘If you really can't figure out which political party or which politician to vote for, just ask if they're on the side of libraries.
Are they voting to fund their libraries?
Are they voting to keep them free?
Then vote for those guys.
They're probably the good guys.
And by the same token, the book burners, the book banners, they're probably the bad guys.’
Pretty even-handed assessment of the success and failure of the EU-funded Human Brain Project, which is ending. Probably the most impressive thing is that, given its troubled inception, it produced some meaningful, if rather ad hoc, brain science. #HBP #brain #simulation #neuroscience

All these red states are now boasting about how they are withdrawing from the American Library Association. They aren’t just satisfied with banning books, they want to get rid of the places that keep and lend them, too. The Christian Right is on the march.
Carl Sagan once warned us of the “dumbing down” of America. He warned of a time when our “critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness...”
That time is upon us. We must do all we can to prevent that darkness from taking hold.

The U.S. House appropriations bill contains language that would block the implementation of the Nelson Memo, which ensures immediate, free access to taxpayer-funded research. 🔓
If you are a US taxpayer, help us to oppose those changes and support the removal of Sec. 552.

(our new manuscript) Uruguay experienced its first Chikungunya virus outbreak in 2023, resulting in a significant burden to its healthcare system. We conducted analysis based on real-time genomic surveillance (30 novel whole genomes) to offer timely insights into recent local transmission dynamics and eco-epidemiological factors behind its emergence and spread in the country.

This library looks amazing:
"Con 4.000 metros cuadrados, la sensación de amplitud es mayor en el interior que en el exterior. Y facilita crear puntos de mayor o menor intimidad gracias a espacios con cortinas."
There are 2 new publications today on Covid follow-up at 2 years that shed light on #LongCovid, but there are still many known unknowns, reviewed here
“Just like Omicron was a little out of left field, this BA.2.86 is little out of left field,” says Ashish Jha, a public-health researcher at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and the former White House COVID-19 Response Coordinator. “There is enough here to get us all to start paying attention.”

'The time-honoured paradigm in the theory of virulence evolution assumes a positive relation between infectivity and harmfulness. However, the aetiology of respiratory diseases yields a negative relation, with diseases of the lower respiratory tract being less infective and more harmful. '
'Lifespan reduction was also observed when Atg1 or Atg18 was knocked down in adult fly enteroblasts and midgut stem cells. Over-expression of wild type Atg1 in adult fly muscle or adipocytes reduces lifespan and causes accumulation of high levels of ubiquitinated protein aggregates in muscles'
'I was drawn to #neuroscience for the same reasons that I was drawn to writing. I wanted to learn about consciousness; I hoped that my studies would lead to a deeper understanding of my own inner life and others’. I hoped that memorizing the molecular weight of loneliness might save me from it.'
