Happy birthday to trailblazing #programmer & #computer scientist, Beatrice "Trixie" Worsley. My #linocut shows Worsley seated at the first computer in Canada, the FERUT (which she named) & a flow diagram of one of her programs.
Trixie Worsley earned one of the first doctorate in computer science anywhere, & was supervised by Douglas Hartree and Alan Turing at Cambridge. 🧵1/n

I study #immune #evolution, including host-#pathogen interactions. My work has focused on #antimicrobial #defense #peptides which are like #antibiotics coded by the #genome . A key focus is #immunity-#microbiome interactions 🦠

Every year, Nikon hosts an image competition where all the photos are taken with a #microscope (doesn't have to be their brand scope). This year's winners were announced today and I wrote about it here: https://www.forbes.com/sites/evaamsen/2023/10/17/image-of-optic-disc-wins-annual-microscopy-competition/?sh=54be0e3a27de #WroteThis #science #biology
Paleontologists recently found bonebeds in the Navajo Sandstone near #LakePowell that hold rare #fossils of synapsid reptiles, which are #reptiles with mammal-like features. The discovery could shed light on the connection between mammals and reptiles.

'CONICET, founded in 1958, has ranked as the top scientific institution in Latin America for the past five years. Its 300 research institutes employ almost 12,000 full-time researchers in all scientific disciplines. Milei proposes to privatize it, given what he calls its lack of productivity. “CONICET as it exists today will no longer exist,” he said in September.'

"To understand the basis of individual differences in the absence of genetic differences, we measured two quantitative reproductive traits in 180 genetically identical young adult Caenorhabditis elegans roundworms in a shared environment and performed single-individual transcriptomics on each worm"

Herman Melville's Moby-Dick is first published as The Whale # in 1851.
Melville first proposed the British publication in a June 27, 1850. At the end of May 1851, he delivered the bulk of his manuscript. In the October 1851 issue of Harper's New Monthly Magazine "The Town Ho's Story" was published, with a footnote reading: "From 'The Whale'. The title of a new work by Mr. Melville, in the press of Harper and Brothers, & now publishing in London by Mr. Bentley."
"Retractions, which can happen for a variety of reasons, including falsification of data, plagiarism, bad methodology, or other errors, aren’t necessarily a modern phenomenon: As Oransky wrote for Nature last year, the oldest retraction in their database is from 1756, a critique of Benjamin Franklin’s research on electricity."

🧬 Bioinformatics is a maze of file formats, but you don't always need a special parser to get them into R! 📊 Many files are simply text-based tables with a dump of ‘#’ commented metadata up top. 📜 Use 'comment.char' in 'read.table' or 'comment' in 'read_table', its worth a shot #Bioinformatics #RStats
Just a small printed "s" waiting to become an illuminated initial in this 1503 print. The small "s" indicates: please include a colored big "S" after the print run. Early printed books kept this illuminating tradition from the manuscript age.
The page with the left space for the to be illuminated initial is part of the "Epistolarum D. Francisci philelphi equitis aurati..." Have a look: https://sammlungen.ulb.uni-muenster.de/hd/content/titleinfo/6526468
Individual rare diseases are... rare. But taken together, they affect a significant fraction of the population. We need to develop a sustainable economic model for gene therapy.
"As a result, while the number of people eligible for any single gene therapy might be small, the total number of people eligible across all of them could soon be significant. Annual spending on gene therapies could increase from $5.15 billion 2020 to $25.3 billion in 2026."

"What’s most important is that these models ensure equitable access to these treatments for any eligible patient. The tens of thousands of people with sickle cell should all have the same opportunity as Carter: to wake up one day and feel what it’s like to not be in pain. Equitable access is also what matters for the future of the technological revolution brewing in medicine. After all, what good are miracle cures if only the few can get them?"
