"Cochrane ignored this epidemiological evidence because it didn't meet its rigid standard. I have called this approach “methodological fetishism,” when scientists fixate on a preferred methodology and dismiss studies that don't follow it. Sadly, it's not unique to Cochrane. By dogmatically insisting on a particular definition of rigor, scientists in the past have landed on wrong answers more than once."
"The European Commission is proposing a “voluntary solidarity mechanism” requested by France and Germany and an early warning system flagging when drugs become scarce, according to draft proposals seen by the Financial Times. If insufficient donors come forward, EU capitals will be allowed to tap into an EU-funded stockpile set up during the Covid-19 pandemic and take other emergency measures."

I looked around — I found some clues, but it is definitely not abundant. 🧐
"I believe alien life is quite common in the universe, although intelligent life is less so. Some say it has yet to appear on planet Earth."
Stephen Hawking (1942-2018)
'CONICET, founded in 1958, has ranked as the top scientific institution in Latin America for the past five years. Its 300 research institutes employ almost 12,000 full-time researchers in all scientific disciplines. Milei proposes to privatize it, given what he calls its lack of productivity. “CONICET as it exists today will no longer exist,” he said in September.'
"Retractions, which can happen for a variety of reasons, including falsification of data, plagiarism, bad methodology, or other errors, aren’t necessarily a modern phenomenon: As Oransky wrote for Nature last year, the oldest retraction in their database is from 1756, a critique of Benjamin Franklin’s research on electricity."

'Le Carré’s interview was filmed in 2019. It would be his last. He died in December 2020. And while the circumstances were sudden — a fall in his home — the writer had been 88 when sitting down with Morris. It is not an age when one is unaware that time is finite. Now, The Pigeon Tunnel shares with The Fog of War (after which Robert McNamara died in 2009) a sense of legacy.
“You make me sound like the Grim Reaper,” Morris says. Not quite, I say. But the Grim Reaper’s documentary maker? He pauses. I worry I’ve offended him. “No, I like it!”'

"To understand the basis of individual differences in the absence of genetic differences, we measured two quantitative reproductive traits in 180 genetically identical young adult Caenorhabditis elegans roundworms in a shared environment and performed single-individual transcriptomics on each worm"

Colares, near Sintra, has very special wines - the vines grow on the beach.
This one was delicious.

A História Mais Pequena do Mundo nasceu numa noite em que, já tarde, as crianças ainda pediam uma história a uma mãe já muito cansada e preocupada com o atraso na hora de as deitar. O resultado foi o riso e a edição um livro que ajudará a todos!

"It's important to remember that the 'drugs' aren't just the pills we stash in our medicine cabinets. Ask yourself this: is it really acceptable that we only bothered to test sex differences for general anesthesia in 1999? Turns out women wake up faster than men, regardless of their age, weight or the dosage they've been given."

Until I worked on this piece, I had no idea how out of control blood pressure still is for most people. Estimates are that only one fifth of those with high blood pressure manage it effectively. New RNA drugs that may only require dosing two to four times a year could really help, but at what cost? My latest Clinical Pipeline column.
"Altogether, these data demonstrate that MMRd in these models is not sufficient to increase immunogenicity or sensitivity of tumors to ICB, alone or in combination with chemotherapy, in stark contrast to previous reports in cell-line transplant models"
I've worked on all of science, from B cells to T cells.
