"Here, we demonstrate that insulin receptors (Insr) in KrasG12D-expressing pancreatic acinar cells are dispensable for glucose homeostasis but necessary for hyperinsulinemia-driven PanIN formation in the context of diet-induced hyperinsulinemia and obesity."

Plan S re-fashioned as Plan U? nature.com/articles/d41586-023

They call for a scholar-led system and articles available from the outset. In this respect it looks familiar ;-) journals.plos.org/plosbiology/

I note this "seems a recognition that the first version of Plan S was going in an undesirable direction: its vision of open access has been delivered through business models which are highly inequitable”.

How peer review is paid for is TBD tho. And we mustn't forget other checks journals.plos.org/plosbiology/

"Using the Drosophila hematopoietic organ, the lymph gland, we show that cells of the hematopoietic niche, the posterior signaling center (PSC), communicate using gap junctions (GJs) and form a signaling network."

“the [Gaza] health ministry’s figures from previous conflicts have been reliable, according to the UN and human-rights organisations, which have scrutinised them, and come up with their own estimates"

Daja Schichler, Antonia Konle, Brooke Morriswood @TIR_scienceblog and colleagues discover that entry of surface bound cargo in the trypanosome flagellar pocket is dependent on the hook protein TbSmee1 and clathrin-mediated endocytosis.

"If gene therapy is approved, how will our health care system make sure that all patients are educated about their options? When a much simpler drug like hydroxyurea remains underutilized, this is a real challenge."

When leaning becomes falling

"The tower, which, along with the Asinelli Tower, makes up the “two towers,” a symbol of the city, has historically slanted four degrees. But recent surveys have found traces of unexpected rotation in its incline and other imperceptible movements that need to be studied more carefully, the authorities said."

"A poet is the most unpoetical of anything in existence; because he has no identity — he is continually informing — and filling some other body."
Letter to Richard Woodhouse

British Poet John Keats was born #OTD in 1795. He was a romantic lyric poet who devoted his short life to the perfection of a poetry marked by vivid imagery, great sensuous appeal, and an attempt to express a philosophy through classical legend. via @Britannica

Thanks to the program students and the European MD/PhD Association for the invitation to speak at their "Finding the Creative Spark in Biomedical Research" conference at Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG)/PRBB (Barcelona Biomedical Research Park).

"Cephalopod cognition also considerably widens the evolutionary gamut of intelligence, showing that it can evolve without a vertebrate Bauplan — without an internal skeleton or skull or vertebrate brain architecture. An intelligent animal so radically different from us somehow makes our place in evolution seem a little less special. To us, oh so sapient, humans, cephalopods are a distant mirror, one that may reflect — and deflect — some explanations for the evolution of intelligence generally."

@tg9541 There are vague references to a 2020 study then this "Grodstein’s study, published earlier this year, made a notable discovery. While signs of vascular disease in the brain appeared to have decreased over time, the extent of the distinctive markers of Alzheimer’s in the brain stayed the same. This led the team to hypothesise that “any decrease in clinical Alzheimer’s dementia might be due in part to better cardiovascular health and in part to increased resilience to [the causes of] Alzheimer’s”, such as amyloid plaque, rather than to a decrease in Alzheimer’s pathology itself." which I think refers to this

Interesting study of the performance of phylogenetic models for gene expression evolution, although they seem to have only investigated single-optimum OU models, which IMO limits conclusions on datasets with orthologs and paralogs. (Indeed they find poor performance for our 2016 dataset testing the ortholog conjucture.)

We've received a LOT of questions about how male spiders jettisoning their dicks could possibly improve their reproductive chances. Male genitalia isn't our specialty, and there's several reasons. Some of the reasons relate to vaginas so we'll answer your questions anyway.

'AI-enabled drug discovery has yet to prove itself in the clinic. And on top of that, companies have to worry about intellectual property — regarding not only the drugs but also the discovery methods. “Everybody patents molecules,” says Alex Aliper, the president of Insilico Medicine, headquartered in New York City and Hong Kong. “For algorithms, it’s a choice.”
