'In this study, we show that reversal of methylation silencing of STING in murine melanoma cell lines using a clinically available DNA methylation inhibitor can improve agonist-induced STING activation and type-I IFN induction, which, in tumor-bearing mice, can induce tumor regression through a CD8+ T cell-dependent immune response.'

Wow, that's impressive: cerebellar cross-sections for 56 mammalian species, and data showing that "Ancestral estimations indicate that size and folding of the cerebrum and cerebellum increase and decrease concertedly through evolution."

Question: does the pachyderm's (elephant) cerebellum also follow the proportionality rule with the cerebrum? I recall a commentary (Herculano-Houzel doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2022.01. ) on how the elephant's cerebellum is 96% of all brain cells, when normally it's "only" 80%, at least in primates.

Hi Mastodon folks. Twitter is getting quieter so I've clearly lost my previous @scotttishwaddell twitterverse. I'll start posting occasional lab news here too (instead) so please follow if that's of interest. We've lots in the pipeline and I'm missing learning about the other cool science out there that used to flash by my eyes on Twitter. Cheers, Scott. #Introduction #neuroscience #drosophila #dopamine

In an open letter by eight European leaders to #bigtech companies, we stress the urgent need to take more efficient steps against disinformation.

Social media should not be used to destabilise democracies. Tech platforms also have a responsibility to make sure it doesn't happen.

Remember folks, you must definitely not mention any parallels between 1930s Germany and the current government's plans to round up the "other" people and concentrate them into camps, because the poor little snowflake Tory MPs get offended if you do and it will make them cry

'In most cases, researchers rely on P values to establish the scientific or practical significance of their findings. However, statistical significance alone provides very little information that is useful for making inferences about scientific or policy significance. For this reason, we require authors to provide much more information than just P values — in this Editorial, we explain our requirements.'

"The induction of cellular cytotoxicity requires that the NK cell contacts its target cell and establishes a lytic immunological synapse. Previous reports have revealed that membrane protrusions may be a component of immune synapses. Here, we explored whether changes in the topology of intratumoral NK cell membranes relate to the formation of lytic immunological synapses."

"The revenue model of mega-journals is based entirely on charging article publication fees. The publishers increase these fees when a journal improves its impact factor ranking. The model secures high journal revenue but poses difficulties for authors with limited discretionary funds."

Antisense oligos and personalised medicine.

"Susannah joins a small but growing group of patients who have received treatments designed just for them, called ‘N of 1’ therapies. Personalized medicine seemed to be just around the corner for decades, but in 2018, the corner had finally been turned when a custom-designed ASO made its clinical debut at Boston Children’s Hospital."
