"And in evolutionary terms, species don’t really get a harder problem than the one we have to deal with: Human beings are really, really bad at reproducing ourselves. Even today, with modern medical interventions, our pregnancies and births—and, as a result, our postpartum recoveries—are longer, harder, and more prone to crippling complications than they are for most other primates."

'In this study, we investigate the role of microbiota-derived acetate in the regulation of O-GlcNAcylation and HCC progression under high fructose consumption. We report that fructose promotes HCC progression by enhancing O-GlcNAcylation via microbiota-derived acetate.'

In interviews, Katalin Karikó remarkably expresses no bitterness about her experiences. Just a clear focus on the goal of using mRNA to treat human disease. pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2119 #Nobel #science

'The snub was about more than just gender, according to Ms. Moss. “It’s easy to say she (Lise Meitner) didn’t get it because she was a woman,” Ms. Moss said. “One doesn’t think a woman is going to make noise about things.” Ms. Moss also believes Meitner’s heritage was at play: “This is a case where it was because she was a Jew.”

"Perhaps crypto was a legit fountain of wealth and success – perhaps it was moneyball for money, in which a new gang of smart rationalists were outfoxing traditional investors. Which made Sam Bankman-Fried, the lord and saviour of these renegades, a perfect Michael Lewis character."

'If Sunak had pissed about any longer, the Netflix doc about the decision could actually have come out while he was still droning on about not having decided it. This would have ripped a tear in the events-to-content continuum, reversing the natural direction of travel, and effectively ceding control of the UK to Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos. Then again, maybe it would be an upgrade. At this rate, the best hope for the country might be for Ryan Reynolds and the other one to buy us and use us as a content farm.'

Shocking story about mRNA pioneer/Nobel winner Katalin Karikó, whose early advisor at Temple tried to have her deported & derailed her career because she dared to look for a better-paying job.

Later, UPenn demoted her, then forced her out, because her research wasn't bringing in enough funding. #NobelPrize #science [HT Paul Novosad]
